HardiBacker Over Hardwood-how To Attach?
Floor is 100 year old 3/4 t & g pine over 3/4 pine plank subfloor. Floor is rock solid and nailed tight. I know the CBU is usually screwed down but I've seen guys staple and nail it also. Should it be bedded down in mortar, or glued to the hardwood in addition to the fasteners or is that even necessary? Also, can the sheets be butted tight or should there be a gap for the mud and tape? TIA

Hardwood as in a finished floor?, if so, it has to come up and plywood put down.
In any case, you still need plywood, 1/2" or better, CBU can not be installed over plank flooring.

Are you sure you can't save the 100 yr old floor? It seems a shame to just cover it up. That makes me sad.

I know, it looks really nice too, old heart pine. They are currently ripping up the carpet from the entire second floor and refinishing all those floors. In the kitchen where I'm tiling there was a chimney fire back in the 50s. There's a large repair patch from that which had some major water damage from a leaky fridge water supply. As you can see the damage is through the hardwood as well as the plank subfloor.

Re: HardiBacker Over Hardwood-how To Attach?
I agree the hardwood has to go. We just finished replacing a floor in which they put [of all things,Ditra over hardwood] and within 5 years the tiles were cracking and grout lines opening up. Backer board over hardwood may
last a bit longer but I wouldn't do it. We tore out all the hardwood and put in 3/4 t&g plywood glued, mudded 1/4 fiberock and then tile. I've seen the result of that kind of install. |
