Grout Color Change

I'm a mason that did a large slate floor. 3/4" green VT slate. The grout color called for was "gray" which, on the color chart had slight brown tint to it.
Everyone loved it and upon mixing and installing it looked fine. Now a couple days out it has lightened to a truer, lighter "gray". I'm thinking of using some kind of grout stain to darken it, but still tossing ideas around. Any opinions?

Re: Grout Color Change

I've always found a similar situation. When a customer gets excited about a dark grout color, it never seems to dry as dark as they thought it would.
I think grout colorant would work just fine. Aqua Mix makes some. I've had to use it before and I was please with the results:

Re: Grout Color Change

Aqua Mix works great for going darker over sanded grout. Ive used it a couple times and it was amazing. When I have tried to use the white over epoxy it always ends with a disaster. It didnt matter how well i cleaned it it needed atleast 2 coats. The last one I did I spent 16 hrs with straight razors cleaning it off the tile. Lesson learned, only on sanded grout for me...

Re: Grout Color Change

I have some slate and grout left over. I'll make a mock-up and do some experimenting.

I can offer a solution for your dilemma if nothing has been sealed yet. If you wet the grout does it revert to the color the people would be happy with?

That's right, an enhancer should do the trick here. You can't keep it off the slate so do a test first.

Doing a mock up today. I'll try some kind of stain/enhancer Monday.
