Question

Granite Tile On A Formica Countertop Please Help.

Hello Everyone,

Our next project is to install Granite Tile (12 x 12) on a kitchen countertop (Formica) and was wondering what everyone else does. Last time we did the project we used Harid's Backer-Board and was wondering if that is what everyone else does or do you lay the Granite Tile directly on the Formica? Any suggestions on this matter would be great seeing we have 3 jobs lined up for the same work in the coming weeks...

Thats what we do. We have done around ten kitchens with granite tiles. It is just the easiest. We are by no means super pro tilers. I guarantee if you mentioned this on a tile site they would rip you apart. Our biggest issue with doing this really comes down to attaching clips for the sink and polishing unavoidable cut edges.

Just caught the backer board while skimming. This needs to be stressed and this post should do it.

If you do anything less than this, how can you guarantee your work?

That's not even enough. Nothing less than 2 layers of plywood totaling atleast 1 1/4" BEFORE CBU, membrane, or whatever.

Not a bad idea! Now all you need to do is find someone local to you who knows what he's doing, to put it together!

I would never set tile on Formica.

I do a counter top install like angus242 shows.
