Granite Tile Counter Top

So I am doing this counter top job, I've done lots of ceramic, but i have a few questions on this granite 12x12 -
-Backing - Is 3/4" plywood and 1/4" hardi backer adequate?
-Spacing - Ive heard butt them together, and I've heard 1/32-1/16" spacing??
-Back butter or stick and set?
-Have a textured drywall that i will be puting the backsplash on - what do i do to prep that? Float and hardi backer?

Thanks guys....

Hmmmm, 3 choices - read the directions, use the Search button above, or get a TCNA book

Re: Granite Tile Counter Top

I have found that the best way to install granite tiles on a counter top is with a lath and concrete base over the 3/4 inch plywood. That is the only way I know of to get a perfectly flat and level base for the installation of granite tile. Comb the counter top with thin set and a thin layer of back butter to each tile. I alway leave a very thin grout line of 1/16th to allow for grout. I have not had any problems with this method.

I am no expert for sure ... But why wouldn't you use 24" x 24" granite tile instead of the 12"....... less work, less seams.....?

Re: Granite Tile Counter Top

3/4" ply and 1/4" backerboard is a suitable substrate.
When you're prepping, ensure the width from wall to edge will allow for your two rows of tile with grout spacing (or one if using a 24" tile). I prefer 1/16" for grout line.
I usually use unmodified thiset and mix it full strength with laytex additive and back butter each tile.

As far as your textured drywall, I would cut out the area you will be installing tile backsplash with a keyhole saw and install durock or other suitable wall backerboard system.

good luck with your project
have fun

Re: Granite Tile Counter Top

Bill, I went to your countertop page - very nice!!
I especially liked this one. The antique compass design is really nice!

What do you think of Ditra on top of a couple of layers of ply??

The reason I ask is I will be undermouting a s.s. sink and plan on using Schluter Rondec countertop edge as well as the corner profiles they have for the sink install. Thought the ditra would work well to bring the level up flush to the sink before tiling.

Re: Granite Tile Counter Top

It's not a bad idea, but you might have to shim the sink up about a 1/16". It just might sit a hair low. But it's a good idea!
