Glue Travertine Wall Tile To Brick?

A customer would like to install 6 x 12 Travertine tiles in his basement on an existing brick masonry wall. He would like them installed tight with no grout joints (like a dry stack wall). My question is could I apply these directly to the brick with a construction adhesive as opposed to scratch coating the entire wall with mortar? The wall is about 12' x 7' tall.

Yes, but it will look horrible and forfeit one of the best/primary qualities of the travertine

You can get an entire 50lb bag of thinset for the cost of 2 tubes of construction adhesive.

DO NOT USE CONSTRUCTION ADHESIVE!

Use modified thinset---read some of the How To set tile post next door at DIYchat--Link at bottom of page--Mike--

Re: Glue Travertine Wall Tile To Brick?

PB, don't buy glue I'll teach you how to make your own thinset... dig in your backyard till u find some clay and scoop into a bucket with some sand that you stole out of your neighbors sand box. Next pour a jug of kool aid in there and mix. (Note: the chemicals in the kool aid will be like a latex additive so your tiles will stick great!)
Thinset for the cost of kool aid $o.39

Re: Glue Travertine Wall Tile To Brick?

I'm sorry, I assumed I would receive some legitimate concerns as to why these tiles could not be glued on. This is purely an aesthetic detail designed to hide some outdated brick. If this surface was to be walked on or grouted I would not be posting this. I am not concerned about moisture from the brick. This is a very dry basement and Thinset would not stop any moisture transmission anyway.

Re: Glue Travertine Wall Tile To Brick?

Any of those adhesives will eventually stain the stone----in a year or two you will see every glue line on the face of the travertine--Use thinset,it's cheap--easy to work with--and the product for the job--

Why would you want to use something that is more expensive--less grab and very likely to fail?

use thin set

Re: Glue Travertine Wall Tile To Brick?

Cause its in a tube, and it sticks stuff to other stuff. I dont get why HO always want to go some crazy route. Its not cheaper, I imagine its harder to get the stone to stick to the wall as thinset (sucks) with glue you would have top hold it there with something till it dries. Make no sense the come here asking pros if they can do it the wrong way.
