Re: Gettin' My Internet "cred" Up

Why's there a missing row at the ceiling on your Oceanside?

Is there a cabinet going in the wall section that was left open?

Re: Gettin' My Internet "cred" Up

ChrW,

It's actually Walker Zanger - The customer did the design on this one - wanted the space left open on the wall to the left of the cabinet - it actually looks very cool in person - as for the "missing row," I just terminated it there - right or wrong - it was the first Walker Zanger/ Oceanside type job I did... Thanks for the questions!

Re: Gettin' My Internet "cred" Up

I like the subway tiled bath a lot...

The two shower heads are a bit strange, though.

What's the outside corner detail by the vanity? Did they not make a short side bullnose in that material?

They should have dropped the GFCI receptacle down a little so it missed your accent stripe.

The bench would have looked better in the same Carrera as the curb. Would hold up better in the long run, too.

Nice work overall... Keep posting

Re: Gettin' My Internet "cred" Up

Subway job - Yerkes job - crazy story there! The contractor who was handling the job died in a boating accident and the homeowner was financially neck deep in the project already... I made some suggestions about a few things including the 2"x6" bullnose on the corner by the toilet, but the HO didn't want to buy any more tile (already on site when he called me) - He asked me to do the best that I could and I think I did okay...

I think you did, too.

We don't always get to choose what we are asked to install.

Thanks for sharing the pics.

There is a row of black dots missing, skipped pattern, in that floor next to the sink. Other then that, keep at it.

Nice looking work for the most part. I do see a lot of raw tile edges. Is there a reason those edges were left raw and not trimmed or finished?

WOW!! That's some nice work!!

Center the pic of the black and white hex floor on your monitor, and stare at it as you scroll up and down a bit-- talk about an optical delusion!! (?)

We won't talk about the tile in the first couple of pics-- the stuff that looks like someone drew grout joints on KERDI!!

Graeson-- I'm just funnin. That really is some good work.

That travertine is BIGTIME awesome!

Re: Gettin' My Internet "cred" Up

Floor dude - Holy - I see it too... I can't believe neither I or the HO caught that!

Bud - I'm pretty good with coming up with excuses, but I'm going to spare you... There are a few raw edges - especially on the first shower's outside wall

And Bill - It does look like grout joints on Kerdi! I never thought of that! Doesn't in person, though!

Thanks to all of you for your replies!!

Re: Gettin' My Internet "cred" Up

Though I'm not an expert it looks great to me!

Question for you guys about mosaics....what do you do when the mounting is crap? I was doing one of those "favors for a friend".....namely doing free work after their DIY project headed deep into the crapper and I was doing a tub surround in 3 inch mosaics from Lowe's. The mounting was horrendous. If It had been a job for a customer I suppose I would have cut all the tiles apart and made the job perfect but also tripling or more my time...how do you deal w/ crappy mountings on tile jobs? Are there certain brands that mount their mosaics well? I noticed even Daltile mountings are piss poor.

The home center mosaics are some of the worst I've worked with.

Usually, once you get it on the wall, you end up slicing the mounting with a utility knife so you can micro-adjust the individual pieces.

Re: Gettin' My Internet "cred" Up

I lay the sheet out beforehand and try to eyeball the mount. If I see anything out of place, I pull that tile off before it goes up. I can then place the single tile in correctly. Although, things become clearer once they are up, so then out comes the utility knife....

Re: Gettin' My Internet "cred" Up

Tile mosaics were originally an art form and intended to be somewhat primitive in appearance. Some of the helter-skelter placements of mosaic tiles on mounting backers are in fact intentional and not at all poor quality control.

Install them as delivered and admire their beauty.

Re: Gettin' My Internet "cred" Up

Artform, yes...

INTENDED to look primitive? That's an awfully assumptive stretch.

Comparing hand made ancient mosaics to the average fare off-the-shelf at Lowes is a bit of a stretch.

Actually, it's not. These tiles aren't meant to imitate ancient mosaics. But Ceramic mosaics ARE notorious for being, as my wife says, "skiwampus" (it's a technical term )

It's considered to be the "nature of the beast". If you get sheets that won't line up with each other, or entire sheets are screwed, that's one thing-- time to bring em back. And if it's just one or two tiles every now and then, yes, I'll cut em out and install em separately, too. But it's not required when using ceramic mosaics, and shouldn't be expected. If the owner doesn't care for it, they're free to pick out another material. Kinda like the woman down in Key Largo who decided to throw just under 16000 (yes, that's sixteen THOUSAND) feet of perfectly good saltillo in a dumpster because she didn't want to see anyone else get "stuck" with that crap!
