Dark Spots In Grout

Has anybody ever noticed dark spots showing up in newly installed grout? I have seen it before on a basement floor and assumed it was absorbing some of the moisture out of the concrete. Today, I noticed a couple of spots in the shower walls. Do you guys have any ideas what could be causing this?

...and just yet another reason to not use cementitious grout.

You didn't mention the color of the grout so I can only guess. Yes, moisture could be an issue. Poor mixing could also be a problem. Well water or water with high mineral content could also be a problem.

Try some urethane grout. No water to measure. No mineral issues. No color inconsistencies. You get the point.

My favorite cementous grout issue is the red streaks when troweling on.

OP, where are the spots on the wall? If it's at the bottom of the wall then maybe it's the last spot to dry. Or, have any pinholes? A little bit if water might have gotten behind the tile.

Clean bucket, new bag of grout, and mixed thoroughly.

I am also reluctant to seal the grout as I worry that it could "set in" the stain.

Re: Dark Spots In Grout

kc-

How old is the grout (before you mixed it)? The add mixture? Or did you just mix with water? Public water or well water? Was it a single batch of grout or from multiple sources?

Sorry to hear about your problem. Hopefully some one has a remedy. I am with Angus. I only use urethane based grouts. Haven't needed to use epoxy yet but I hear good things about it now.

Who is the manufacturer?

Re: Dark Spots In Grout

We used an admixture in place of water for the mix. There are only a few spots that actually look different. Hopefully sealing the grout will even out the coloring.

I am not sure who the manufacturer was as the bag was thrown away.

I had a problem with white grout yellowing. Turns out it got durabond dust in it. Only happened in a couple spots. Had to remove and replace.

I think it is wise to run the grout through a sieve first, then break up all the crumbles left behind.

Re: Dark Spots In Grout

After a bit of research I have learned that if you do not mix the entire bag at once, the color pigments can be heavier in either the upper or lower portion of the bag.

It's honestly not that noticeable but it's really bugging the HO. I am going to try and mix up some more grout to a runny consistency and then paint it over all of the grout lines.

Never had good luck with the painting thing. It will usually fall off. Tear it out and redo would be better.

That's a recipe for efflorescence.

I have had that same problem with microban.

While it may have been the durabond dust, I know for sure that microban will react with some organic compound(s?)

I spilled coffee with cream on a driveway and grabbed the 5gal bucket of rinse water I was using to sluice it off the driveway. Turned neon yellow as soon as it hit the coffee, it was pretty wild.
