Re: Building A Shower Bench When Using Backer Board On Walls?

hahaha bud....i know man i suck at explaining things im sorry guys.

yes that is the bench in the picture. i was told by the hop mop owner that the bench needs to be finished with lath and mortar. but im using densShield backer board on the walls.

so my question was how do i transition the two....and how do i attach the lath without stapling through the hop mop?

most you pros dont use backer board so i know this sounds stupid...but how would you build a bench when using backer board on the walls?

again im sorry wish i could explain this all better

I guess I don't know how you let it get this far without knowing what you were going to do! Just cover the sucker with backerboard and RedGard all the seams and fastener penetrations. You have to do that anyway. The holes in the bench (hot mop) won't matter. You paid $325 for that tar-job ONLY??? Jesus I'm in the wrong business!

i know man...at first i thought i could use densShield and redguard for the bench.

then the hot mop guy says no you need to lath and mud so i was like oh eff!!!

Re: Building A Shower Bench When Using Backer Board On Walls?

[quote=wopachop;599248]man lots of talented people here wish someone could help with da bench....i just keep reading "i only kerdi". next bath i will try that too but could really use advice on the bench

down here in cali Lowes sells densGuard in 32" wide and its blue. tile store sells densShield in 48" wide and its grey.

can anyone give advice on how to float this bench?

should i not even staple the lath?

cx on john forum said i could bend the lath up above the bench and staple it there....but then i will have to shim out the densShield over the lath. that wont work for me cause i need to be at the same distance out from the wall as the drywall still on the wall.

No offense should be taken on my comment......but you need to sub this out to a professional (tile setter) or equivilant. You are guessing and grabbing at several different ideas, none of which make much sense. They are telling you to use Kerdi right now!!!! Your comment on floating I believe is a question on how to waterproof the wood framing.
We use Red Guard over kiln dried studs or dry PT, 3/4" CDX, then 1/4" CBU, then Kerdi. It's a little over kill, but I want to know its sealed from standing water. As far as the walls, CBU and Kerdi should provide protection.

Re: Building A Shower Bench When Using Backer Board On Walls?

i cant kerdi brotha the hot mop is already done. really want to try it for the next bathroom though.

the question on the bench was not about waterproofing the wood framing...that was done by the hot mop.

i was just trying to figure out how to float the bench with fat mud and then transition to a densShield wall.

but decided to just densShield the bench and then waterproof the hell outta it. so i didnt even need to have the bench hop moped. im still learning but places like this really help alot...thanks guys!!!!

Are you saying you actually paint the studs with redgard, then hang 3/4" plywood, then 1/4" hardi, then Kerdi? On walls?

You're kidding, right?

I often get it in 4x8 sheets

I installed concrete board then Kerdi on the ceiling and used unmodified thinset.

A little note - I put a 2" slope on the ceiling (over 4') to allow the water droplets to run off rather than drip. Found out after I should have sloped it about 4" - water still drips.

Is that a steam shower? didn't see any steam outlets.

If not, how is water droplets getting on the ceiling?

For the bench I use 3/4" plywood, then Easy Board, then 3 layers (probably overkill) of Red Guard. It's easy to do and never had a problem. Make sure that you Red Guard up the walls a foot or so, and all the way down to the floor (over the liner).

Don't fall for the bs that "Brand X is THE BEST WAY" that happens a lot.
Denshield will be fine. I'm sure there are millions of units that have it and I've not read about millions of failures this this product.
Redgard is also fine. If you are at la casa depot/home depot, get that.
If you are at lowes, get aquadefense. $39/pail.

I don't know what the regs are out in ca, but I'm sure they are different than in most states. If you don't have to use mud for your bench, just use the densguard, like on the walls. I use tape and goo (redguard/aqua/etc.) on all 90s. Over finished joints,I usually run a coat of goo over those also.
