Check out Schluter they have some of the best tile shower systems around - is hot mopping even allowed still?

Heres a bench for you to look at. Framed with 2x4's, top of bench has 3/4" plywood, 1/2" concrete board - then Schluter Kerdi.

At this stage, the shower is 100% waterproof.

No other better system out there!!

You can't teach a new dog old tricks...

Hot Mopping? I have never seen any tile man waterproof a shower using this method.
Why? Why would anyone do this with all the products and methods available on the market. I'd love someone to come on here and explain. I wouldn't even use it on a roof anymore.
This thread has to be a joke. No serious tradesman would go this route.

Whatever!!!

Jarvis - you water proof all your showers like that or just the steamers like that one?

Nice job, I always like bond on bond patterns, they always look elegant.

"Hot mopping" of showers is something that has existed for a long long time in some areas of the country and installers in those areas would have it no other way. California followed by Arizona leads the pack in hot-mopping showers - most all showers, steam or not.

Personally I wouldn't follow the California methods, never have, but many do. There is nothing wrong with hot mopping a shower but I agree: "Why would anyone do this with all the other great products and methods available on the market"?

I would be curious to know what the cost is to hot mop a shower. Care to share that info chopper?

Waterproofing with Kerdi is the only way I will construct a tile shower.
I probably go a little overboard - walls/ceiling are concrete board - then Kerdi.

Thanks by the way!

would love to try a kerdi shower one day. but yeah here in cali hot mop showers pans is just what we do. cost 325...this is an upstairs apt which added to cost. they come in and float a pitch with mortar...then hop mop.

so anyone have advice on how to float the bench. i know its not the best way but im going to use densShield and redgaurd on the walls...i dont have the skills to float walls and too late to buy and use kerdi.

p.s. im water testing the hot mop and used 80grit on the wall paint so i can primer the glossy surface...thats why you see white dust in the water.

I was wondering about that product. Do you find it works well? I now use concrete board behind Kerdi but have seen the Easy Board and thought about trying it.

Any pros or cons??

thanks
Mike Jarvis

Mike, I'm with ya (and kevjob) and Kerdi everything. However, I've been using DensShield instead of CBU. I like it. SO much lighter and I haven't found any cons.
Convenience factor for me since I get it at the same place as DensArmor, which I use in all non wet location bathroom remodels as well.

Jarvis, easyboard by itself flexes too much for my liking but after it gets kerdi it becomes rigid. No down side yet especially carrying all 6 sheets with one hand.

only thing that bugs me about denshield is 32 inches wide where alot of showers I do are 36 inches.

Nice looking job Jarvis! I am another Kerdi only guy. Its not the only way to properly waterproof a shower but he best one imo. I guess I've drunk the orange kool-aid too I still don't get behind using just drywall though...I've done it and had no problems but it just don't sit right for some reason I've been wanting to try out the easy board also.

It's also available in 4'x5' and 4'x8' sheets.

man lots of talented people here wish someone could help with da bench....i just keep reading "i only kerdi". next bath i will try that too but could really use advice on the bench

down here in cali Lowes sells densGuard in 32" wide and its blue. tile store sells densShield in 48" wide and its grey.

can anyone give advice on how to float this bench?

should i not even staple the lath?

cx on john forum said i could bend the lath up above the bench and staple it there....but then i will have to shim out the densShield over the lath. that wont work for me cause i need to be at the same distance out from the wall as the drywall still on the wall.

thanks for any help guys...peace

I don't think anyone (including me) understands what the hell your talking about: "float out the bench".

What is it you want to do? Is that the bench you are talking about in the picture above? Why does that bench need to be "floated out"? Why would it need lath?
