Best Caulk For Showers???

I was interested in possibly getting opinions on what caulks work the best in tub and shower areas?
Seems like the 'water clean up' ones always seem to crack or attract mold. They're are all big on guarantees but its a major pain to r&r once they fail.
Any brand recommendations that are fairly easy to work with?

Thanks

Only use 100% silicone. I use Laticrete Latasil colored to match the grout.

Re: Best Caulk For Showers???

Most, if not all, nowadays, grout manufacturers provide color matching caulk. And all the ones I've used in the past 2 years or so have been siliconized. They may not be 100% silicone as angus prefers, but they are superior to any acrylic or latex caulking in wet areas.

To be specific, the grout manufacturers that I refer to are Lacticrete, Mapei, and Custom.

If you are just worried about the horizontal line between the tub and tile, or a prefab shower pan and tile, any silicone caulking that matches the color of the tub/pan will work. Ask the HO if they prefer caulk that matches the tub/pan or the grout. Easier to ask than assume and having to remove later.

Re: Best Caulk For Showers???

Acrylic caulks will fail much sooner than 100% silicone.

For the added piece of mind and longevity, 100% silicone is the only way to go.

Well, that is, unless you eliminate the caulk joint altogether.

Another vote for 100% silicone. I like Color Sil by Color Rite.

Custom Building Prods is supposed to have come out with a color matched 100% silicone that is not as shiny as other silicones, and is rated for traffic. Making it perfect for expansion joints. Haven't tried, or seen it yet.

It is on their website: http://custombuildingproducts.com/Pr...er=pro&lang=en

I assume you order Color Sil direct. What do they charge per tube with shipping?

Yep, you call them direct. Shipping on one tube is kinda steep, I think about 12 bucks. Best if you order a few tubes at a time, I have ordered six tubes at a time, and if memory serves, shipping was the same as one tube.

They have color charts on hand for major grout manufacturers, and will color match over the phone. They will also send you a color chart for their silicones which is actual dabs of silicone for each of the forty four colors.

I been using CRL Caulking by C.R Laurence Co. I think it's best caulking on the market for glass and shower applications.

Not that I use a lot of %100 silicone, but occasionally I have used Kampel Axiom 25 and got great results. Limited of colors though.$12+S&H per tube

I think the absolut best silicone caulk is "LEXEL" , it costs around eight dollars a tube.

Re: Best Caulk For Showers???

Lexel isn't silicone last I checked. It also stays tacky.

I usually use NP1 if I have the time to let it cure. Moisture cured urethane products are great. It'll far outlast silicone, but you do have a pretty lengthy cure time before putting a shower into use. I'm talking at least 3 days. I've got NP1 sealing cast iron tub to ceramic walls and the corners of those walls in a few tubs. I have Latisil in a couple more. The Latisil is starting to peel in spots on the tub top after only a year of use. The NP1 is virtually indestructible.

Latisil peeling after one year? Sounds like installer error. I've seen properly applied silicone last for years.

The key to a durable silicone joint is to not tool it down to a feather edge, i.e. don't simply smear it with your finger.

I agree with Greg. Actually, if any well known product fails, chances are pretty high that the installer didn't bother following the installation instructions.

i always tool with my finger, what are you proposing? leaving the bead as if it just came out of the tube? or tool with less feathering profile?

If you can run a good bead right out of the tube, that is the best way. If not, a non feathering tooling device and solution is the way to go.

Denatured alcohol and my finger is all I tool silicone with. Works like a champ.

Re: Best Caulk For Showers???

Nope used the product just as directions say to. Even used the primer for it to be sure on the last one. All those tubes were from the same case though so I'm starting to wonder if maybe it was a bad batch of product. Daltile seems to be keeping this stuff on the shelf for years before selling it. I'm not saying the whole seal has failed in either case, just that the outside edge has lost adhesion. The seal all the way back into the wall is still intact.
