Illuminated Yard Sign (power Source???)

Paul or others in this area, need ideas. I am making 2 new yard signs, 2 verticle 4x4 posts w/copper inset pyramid caps(mahogany), 2 horizontal members (mahogany) like top/bottom deck railing, I am going to have 2 panes of glass with faux etched decals, the panes will be sandwiched with a 1/16" mahogany ply between them (decal side inboard) I want to route channels in the t/b rails to accept the "glass sign sandwich" and illuminate the glass from within the channels. What would be the best and smallest way to achieve this. Additionally what would be the best way to power this without having a boat battery with box and aligator clips sitting next to the sign? tia for any ideas

Re: Illuminated Yard Sign (power Source???)

I have solar powered lights for my job-signs in areas that get foot traffic. HD sells cheap ones that I mount to the top and they provide enough light for someone to read the sign at night. I use the $20 ones, but they do sell some for $30 that have a biger solor panel and provide a brighter light.

I only install a light on one side, if they are walking their dog they can turn around to read the sign.

What I think you're talking about is edge lighting. This is accomplished with edlight extrusions, which normally contain LED's. Here's a couple of pics:

These are normally 12v DC, so you'd need a power supply mounted someplace and a low voltage cable run out to your sign. Do a Google search for edgelight extrusion and edgelit extrusion. Harbor sales is one place for such supplies. http://www.harborsales.net/ledacc.cf...yID=2&cat=LEDs

You can get an LED driver and hook it up to a regular 12v transformer as well.

Re: Illuminated Yard Sign (power Source???)

if these are your job site "yard barkers" check with planning & zoning, as the y do not allow illuminated
"yard barkers" in my neck of the woods.

Are you guys that have the illuminated signs seeing more leads from them?

I am curious, as I have never ever thought about having lighted signs.

Re: Illuminated Yard Sign (power Source???)

I just shine a light onto my yard sign when permitted. (Most of my projects are in areas that do not allow yard signs) In those situations, there is a marked difference on people noticing and calling about lighting.

I too use a couple of pretty traditional site signs that are illuminated. Mine are 2x3 coreplast signs in steel frames. I mounted a Nightscaping Constitution fixture with a Q20X lamp onto the top rail of the sign shining down.

They are very effective.

Have a great day.

James, it's good to see you here. How often are you permitted to put out a sign? It seems to be very rare for me but the word of mouth in those neighborhoods is great.

I will admit it is not that often I put one out.... most of my sites dont have a lot of driveby traffic! I do use them occasionally on boathouses and docks that I am proud of for the night boating traffic to see.

Have a great day.
