Re: How Many Out There Perform Only Landscape Lighting?

This is the first forum I have visited for lighting. We began to install it last year for one of our pool contractors, and now it is an integral part of almost any proposal we do. Most customers choose it. I have been trying to learn the proper techniques and ways but the manufacturers' seminars are often misleading. One guy had no clue what spider-splicing was and did not recommend it while others sware by it. My problem is finding good training from people who really know what they are doing. We are about to open a new business that strictly does lighting, but I want to make sure we are doing it right first. Any suggestions?

Where are you located? Maybe I can turn you on to someone in your area that can take you under their wing. I would also check into the AOLP. Their standards for installation along with the certification study guide make great learning tools as well. There is also this forum. I am always happy to answer any questions that you might have.

Thanks for the response, Paul. I am just north of Atlanta, GA. I love lighting but definitely want to do it in a way that helps the industry. I will check out that site as well.

I am an irrigation service company and landscape lighting repair/installer. I would like to eventually just do lighting full time.

I am glad we have a place to talk about our professional trade.

Re: How Many Out There Perform Only Landscape Lighting?

Hello all,

I am fired up about landscaped lighting as is everyone else. I currently do full service landscape and lawn maintenance, but I am making the move. I have a few questions for the forum, does anyone know of the liscensing requirements in Florida? What would be a good study for designs, that would explain the hows and the why's. I am trying to locate local seminars and other resounces ( such as this board ) for quality unbiased information. I am eager to get started and would like to know if there is anything that I could do prior to hands on in someones yard. Thank you for all your help in advance.

Re: How Many Out There Perform Only Landscape Lighting?

Hey there and welcome, Florida does require you to have a low voltage electrical license. Check with your local inspector to get the information you need. I would suggest contacting Florida Outdoor Lighting Distributors to help you with licensing, design, and materials. Chuck Link and the rest of the folks there are very helpful and will get you set up and running in no time.

I also suggest joining the AOLP (Association of Outdoor Lighting Professionals). You will find it at www.aolponline.org . This is a group of the best lighting professionals from across the country.

Good luck,

Re: How Many Out There Perform Only Landscape Lighting?

nightscapespaul,

I have spoken with Chuck Link and he is setting me up with some info. I look forward to getting started as soon as possible. Do you have a demo model or models that you use? Do you install as much commercial as residential? Have you installed them for home builders on spec homes?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: How Many Out There Perform Only Landscape Lighting?

I don't do demos, but many swear by them and it probably is a good idea to get everything going. Once you build a portfolio you might not need to do as many demos.

I'm glad that they are helping you out.

Most of my projects are residential. I would say that it comes out to less than 10%.

You will find that most builders do not want to spend the money to put in lighting on spec homes. I do have some custom builders that I work with but the homes that they build are over a $million.

Re: How Many Out There Perform Only Landscape Lighting?

I have a couple more questions:

What would you say is the value of your average customers home?
Are those homes the norm in your area?
What is your largest cost related item each year?

That is all I have at the moment.
thanks,

Re: How Many Out There Perform Only Landscape Lighting?

I would say that my average clients home is between 1 and 3 $mil. I would not target homes of less than $400k though. That is not the norm in "my" area but there are enough within a 100 mile radios to keep me plenty busy. I would also have to say that my projects would not be considered the average for the industry. There are also many more being built all the time. I have 6 full time guys so labor is my biggest expense followed by materials.

Great forum and energy going here guys.... it would appear this forum is growing by leaps and bounds quickly!

I started in 1999 as landscape lighting only. In 2001 I added achitectural outdoor lighting, in 2003 or so I ventured inside to do interior lighting design and insatallations too. If it lights up, we can help you out.

Have a great day.

Hey Gregg... how are you?

Me? Time? Forums? Well, to be honest, after all the BS over on that other forum I am seriously looking for a new place to contribute. I don't think I can manage two of them to be honest.

Drop me an email sometime so I can tell you what I am up to.

Have a great day.

I'm with you James, that other site is just getting out of hand. I know that Nathan wouldn't allow all of that stuff here.

It's great to see you here Gregg, you and I have been on that other site for a long time. I've also been here for quite some time.

I think this might be my new home though.
