What To Put In The Planter

Hi all

I just finished a front hard-scaping job. It included some ribbons & liners with rough stamped concrete with brown & terracotta colors. The actual field is done using random stone with a release on it. We did a little planter under the window with a few sprinklers. There is also a lower area which needs some plants as well,

The area between the top & bottom planter is only about 12" wide. i am thinking of putting some white gravel there . I need help with some ideas for plants/flowers in the top planter and the bottom one as well. This is in Los Angeles area and this area gets a decent amount of sun light.

Any help is appreciated.

Re: What To Put In The Planter

Can it be planted where you want to put the white gravel? Maybe some herbs. As far as the others, best thing is to go to a nursery (not HD/Lowes/Walmart garden centers) and see what jumps out at you. Take pics of the work with you for help with color choice.

Arghh!!! white gravel?*&%#@!?

You DEFINITELY need a good Horticulturist on your team, and probably an irrigation & a lighting specialist.

BEFORE you design a planter bed, you should know what will be planted there, so you can be sure it's built, and irrigated, to handle it. Most planters are too small for the intended plantings, for example.

Also, most landscape contractors who "know" hardscape, absolutely fail when it comes to installing "plant-appropriate, and/or "microclimate-appropriate" irrigation. Such as, mixing shade & sun areas on the same valve, using the wrong "nozzle" for the job, failing to use newer technology such as landscape drip (Netafim), pressure reducers, weather-based irrigation controllers, etc. Again, bring in someone who knows their stuff.

In Los Angeles/Orange Counties, check out www.OCLDN.net to find a good landscape/planting designer to work with. (in San Diego, call me... shameless plug) Your projects will turn out WAY better, they will fill in properly (as in "sustainable"), and you'll get more/better referrals as a result.
