Is it too late for SOD in PA??

Typically we hydroseed BUT have yet to finish a yard this late in the year. My go to landscaper says no to Hydroseed and a maybe to SOD but will not guarantee it. Call my #2 guy and SOD is a go and the only option this time of year. Called the local SOD supplier and he says they they will be cutting and delivering it as long as the ground is not frozen - he also said no worries that the ground can freeze within days of install with no issues if installed properly. I want to believe #2 and supplier but hate to spend thousands when we budgeted hundreds for it to only fail in the spring.. Any suggestions?

I personally don't prefer sod. That being said, I think we're OK for a few more weeks. We're still not consistently freezing.

I'd rather seed & water personally, but that's just me. It seems to deliver a better root structure, and can be overseeded easily, without holes & divots in the surface...

Sod

As long as you are not freezing yet you can get it in. You really need about two weeks get roots to take hold but you could get away with just one. I'd check the weather before i put it down. Make sure you put some 16-16-16 fertilizer down on the dirt before you install the sod this will help it take off faster. Just a sprinkle of fertilizer will do you ya. Good luck its kinda risky this time of year.

If you can do a proper prep job it's never too late for sod if you can roll it out and get it laid tight. Fertilize first like mentioned, if you can get it watered when possible you're in really good shape but if the ground freezes it puts the sod almost in a state of suspension until it thaws again.

As long as they are cutting sod,
to me the question becomes is
my site dry enough to properly
grade and prep?
I won't spend the money for sod
unless the prep is equal to that
for a seeded lawn.
