Paver Driveway Base Material
I have a paver driveway coming up . The area is all sand, I will be putting 12" of process. Do you think I should use 1-1/4 process for the first 6 inches and the 3/4 on top. I wont have a problem with compaction, my main concern is the sand base. Thanks -Kirk

Re: Paver Driveway Base Material
Welcome, i beleive you posted in the wrong section. You may want to move over to the Masonary section and "New Post" there for your concern. Where you from, Stone Ridge NY down by Kingston?

Re: Paver Driveway Base Material
what advantage do you see using 1 1/4 over just 3/4? make sure you use a geotextile.

Re: Paver Driveway Base Material
I would put down a layer of 3/4 gravel run your compactor over it to firm up the sand put down geotextile then start packing down the base. If it is soft sand add 2" more of base.

Re: Paver Driveway Base Material
Over the base, you will still need a 1" layer of concrete sand (leveled and uncompacted) to use as a setting bed.

Re: Paver Driveway Base Material
6" of 3/4" gravel, topped with 3 " of screenings ( stone dust - coarse) will suffice to carry ANY load.... people LOVE over kill....make money - it will do the job.

Re: Paver Driveway Base Material
Don't forget the 1" sand (uncompacted) setting bed over the compacted base.
If not, you will lose 100% of the time in court for cracking pavers, unlevel and low points.

Re: Paver Driveway Base Material
Check with the manufacturer. Most likely it will be minimum 10" compacted crusher run with seperation fabric under the base, just the way they build road base. It would not be overkill, I've never seen a road built on stone dust? If not done right it will form ruts, follow the manufacturer suggestions and you will have some insurance if any problems.

Re: Paver Driveway Base Material
These guys are giving good advice here. I landscaped for many years, and pavers over driving surfaces can be a bit of a sticky wicket. It seems that one can never get enough compacted base under the paver deck to fully eliminate dips, cracked pavers, slumping edges, etc. When I was landscaping, I used products from uni-lok, and they made a thicker paver specifically for driveways. It called for 10" of compacted sub-base. If the soil seemed unstable, I would use 304's for the first 6 inches and pack the daylights out of it, then 4 inches of 411's for the remainder. those 411's will set up like concrete with a little water spray from the plate compactor. One thing I find in almost every manufacturer's instructions is to use 1" of coarse sand under the pavers. I found out that in the long run, your pavers will sink at least 1/2 of your sand height in the first year, so I stick with 1/2" of sand, especially when trying to match a specific height (like laying up to a retaining wall at a patio edge). Good luck! Don't go cross-eyed (I have memories of a 1/8 mile driveway in Florida, basket weave center with herring-bone accents on either side)
I thought it would never end.
