Yep lucky we did as we hit granite in a few of the holes. There were some big ass rocks coming up in some of the others. Design ended up a little different compared to the first pic I posted as they wanted it more modern looking. I will snap some pics before landscaping and after. I'm back there Tuesday to drink beer, swim and shot guns

How did you do the hidden fasteners?

Dado all the top rails which were 2x4's. Used the kreg HD to fix the top rails and bottom rails to the posts. Then the panels slide into the top rails and we're screwed to the bottom rail. The panels then had a 1x6 under the top rails to hide the kreg HD holes and then a 1x6 for the bottom rail. The only screws you can see are on the other side of the fence and there's 6 on each 1x6 just to hide the 2screws in each panel.

Hope that makes sense. It will when I show the pics. This way no one can see any fixings at all. I was even gonna cap the screws on the rear but he said no one will ever see them anyway.

Had a few people stand there for 10 mins trying to figure out how it was held together lol. Them kreg HD sure do make a nice tight joint. The fence don't budge a 16th when trying to shake the panels.

Re: How Long To Build A Fence

Hey BC Construction,

I usually look back to my direct labor hours to determine how many hours it takes me to install a fence. The way I calculate it out is Direct Material Cost + Direct Labor Cost/how many posts I set. The typical fence I install is a 6' tall; 8' treated posts, 7.5' spacing, three rails face nailed or hung, and 6'x6"x1" dog-eared pickets.

An example of my calculation: it takes me, one man, 10-12 hrs to build a fence with 4 posts.
10hrs/4post= 2.5hrs/per post. 2.5 hours per post takes into account all the other time spent installing the rails, pickets, drivetime, and installing the posts. Mind you I did not calculate for rock.

Let's say I am installing a fence that has 50 posts like your fence does.

For one man to complete the job:

50x2.5hrs/post= 125hrs in total for one man to build the whole fence.

Let's say I have three guys building it.

I take my 125hrs/one man/3men= 41.67 hours total to build a 6' fence. Round it up to 42.

If my labor for three guys is $100.00, I take $100.00x42= $4,200 in Labor.

Let me know what you all think of this method!

Re: How Long To Build A Fence

Tree.... Tree hundred fiddy minutes. Something along those lines?

Seriously though, that would be a week long job for two to three of us. Third guy if we have one available is mostly for hauling materials around the site.

With a good drag behind cable driven auger (Most of our shops around here rent the Little Beaver brand) , we'll have those holes dug in one long sh!tty day, then set the posts and start the rails the next day.

Finish rails third day and start banging in pickets. We use a Hitachi coil nailer that holds 300 galvanized ring shank siding nails. Makes nailing the pickets really fast. One guy holds it in place with a level , one guy quick shoots four to six nails. Immediately after the first two nails go in, holder is grabbing another picket. Finish pickets day four and cut the scallop/arch tops the last day. Do cleanup.

We set all of our posts with one bag each of the red fast-setting Quikrete. Hard as hell in under an hour.

For whatever reason, building any good size gate or two adds half a day to get it right.

Larger amounts of tree roots or access issues could easily add a day to the posts. But once those are in, level, and flush with the fence line, the job is basically half over in terms of effort.

The correct answer is, you build it as long as needed, usually from property corner to property corner.

Check the plans...
