Question

Flagstone Walkway Grade.....when To Put A Step In? Calling All Hardscapers.

Hi everyone,

We're installing a flagstone walkway across the front of the house leaving a 2 foot garden against the house to soften the look and to hide the foundation.

When looking at the house dead on, the left side has been graded about 20" lower than the right side. This is a gradual grade that spans 36' 3" with a 20" difference in the grade over the 36'. My question is this; How much of a grade can flagstone take before I have to put a step in. I had one 5' armour stone step delivered with the flagstone with the idea that we'll use the step as a retainer for the flagstone installing the flagstone up to it and do the rest of the steps next year when budget allows as the grade continues to lower as you go past the house on the way to the garage.

As I'm leaving a two foot, or more if needed, garden bed beside the house can I leave the bed on it's current grade but level the walkway area for the flagstone? Is there a formula for this type of stuff?

Thank-you ever so much. I can post a picture if needed for the visually handi-capped like myself.

Mary
