The Crabgrass War

Let me start by saying that I am NOT a Landscaper.

So this year I decided to get a "Scott's" yard. Weed and Feed, and two treatments of Weed-B-Gone later and I've got Crabgrass shooting up everywhere. I just put the second treatment of weed killer down about 5 days ago and noticed the crabgrass coming in w/ guns blazing yesterday.

FWIW I ONLY have grass and crabgrass growing in my lawn now. Anybody out there w/ some experience messing w/ this? Anything else I should try before this stuff takes over again?

Last year was just crazy w/ the crabgrass and since it was my first year in this house, I didn't really want to worry about it. I was hoping the pre emergent would get a handle on it. Maybe I applied it too early. (Late March)

Any tips?

Thanks,

Josh

There is an over the counter post emergent crabgrass killer available, but I have no experience with it. I do the Scott's 4 step and have no problems with crabgrass. Once it is applied the soil should not be disturbed, as in heavy raking, aerating and dethatching. Once crabgrass germinates, the preventer is useless. I usually put it down when the forsythias start to bloom.

Too late on the pre-emerge. Try some IMAGE crabgrass killer.
Happy mowing

That's one sexy lawn LoneFramer. Is there anything you don't do well?

You need to apply a pre-emergent such as Halts probably in March in your area. Don't worry about it this year. I don't think plus two has any Halts in it. I paid $15.00 per bag and I think it was a 20 lb bag. Halts will stop crabgrass in its tracks. I have used it a lot with great success.
