How Long Is Your Contract?

Just wondering how long a good contract for renovation should be, I was thinking 2 legal size pages... to long?
Could really use a good one for a big up coming job

Renovation contract is 14 pages before addendum. New construction contracts are usually around 225 pages.

Basic terms are 4 pages of 'fine print', plus SOW and signature pages.

Re: How Long Is Your Contract?

Mine is typically 6-8 pages, depending on scope of work.

Just curious, did you look here for sample contracts? It seems there were/are a few put on here to share.

Re: How Long Is Your Contract?

Mine used to be about 8 pages but making font smaller and taking out some stuff that would never be needed ended up at about 4 pages with scope of work.

I'm at 3 with size 12 font, and I update it after nearly every job.

Re: How Long Is Your Contract?

Mine typically is nothing more than a written estimate outlining scope of work & materials, followed by a handshake. Sometimes I even get a deposit check.

I'm in pins camp. Mostly just a handshake Once in a while they can sign bottom of one page estimate. Never take deposit

Re: How Long Is Your Contract?

One page proposal/contract with specific NYS items.
If larger job, specs will run into a separate sheet.
Sometimes deposits and sometimes not
Most jobs are done with a handshake and told to just do it.

I took a look at some but all I could find is really basic service call type contracts.

Re: How Long Is Your Contract?

We have so many requirements that the shortest I can make it and fit everything is 5 pages. Most of our projects end up at 7 pages once the entire SOW is added.

I frankensteined a bunch of samples from the "give a form take a form" I think a contract should be fairly unique to the company, and needs to be updated regularly. Hopefully in a proactive manner, and not reactive.

Mines about two pages, plus SOW. I only use it on larger jobs though.

Re: How Long Is Your Contract?

Mine is usually just a basic one page contract for small to mid size jobs
If it's a larger project, then I add a SOW for the project
I have been lucky so far, half of the people I work for I know well and just a old fashion handshake works!

Yep I'm seven pages long too. Usually I can get the entire scope on one page. So it's not often I have more than 8 pages. It's a whole other ball game when I'm doing a remodel.

Re: How Long Is Your Contract?

Contract is 6 pages so usually 7 with the SOW. Big or complicated jobs have a design section so the SOW rarely gets longer than a page. Right now I get signature on the contract and one on the design.

5 pages plus a SOW addendum and on large stuff I have a second addendum with pay schedules and payment terms, etc.
