Where Do I Start? Confused??

Been doing the following for about a year, and now I want to go 100% legit.

specializing in basic backyard sheds.
South Suburbs of Chicago

I have:
myself.
cousin that works currently as a full time framer.
BIL that works 9-5 as fireman.

Could anyone tell me what I need as far as License, insurance,WC or anything else. How would/could I pay them? Myself? I have read through a lot of posts here and I can't seem to make sense of the "formal" part of it. I have the "costs" part of it pretty much down.

This would be on a week nite, week-end basis for the most part.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

This will give you a good starting point as far as the business aspect.

I am not sure what requirements the Contractor's Board has for IL, but a quick online search will let you know the licensure you will need for the type building you want to do.

You will need General Liablity Insurance, Workman's Comp, a Federal Tax ID number, a state Unemployment account and such. All of that can be found online as to where to register.

SCORE and the SBA also has a ton of resources to help new start ups.

I would suggest consulting an attorney and an accountant to double check all your records, contracts, accounting methods etc to make sure that you meet all the requirements before you actually perform the first job. It's better to spend a bit more time and investment to get it all set up right from the beginning than to get slapped down by an audit or worse after your up and running.

Best of luck to you and your new venture.
