Re: Unrestricted Csl For Ma.
I believe you can, but take that for what it cost you.
Mass.Gov has a lot of info but it's not easy to find. Where in Mass. are you? Fisher College in N. Attleboro has prep classes for the test. I'll try to find and post a few links. |

I have no idea how that would work.
Try these sites. http://www.mass.gov/Eeops/docs/dps/a..._csl_exams.pdf http://cbt.stcc.edu/descriptions/Mas...cense_Exam.asp |

Re: Unrestricted Csl For Ma.
You do not need commercial experience to take the unrestricted exam in Mass. I have worked primarily in residential construction and took the exam a couple of years ago. There are prep classes in Medford and Woburn that I know of. PM if you want more info about the Medford class. Good Luck.

Re: Unrestricted Csl For Ma.
Anyone know how far back the experience requirement for the Mass CSL could be? I did construction a number of years ago and then went to college and worked in the business world. I am considering a career change back to construction. I went to a vocation high school so that counts for one year. Does the board just review each application and decide?

Re: Unrestricted Csl For Ma.
I took the MA CSL this past Spring. Yes, Fisher offers courses, I believe some of the local Voc schools offer courses. I didn't take any course, just got myself very familiar with the layout of the book.(7th ed) I believe the courses do just the same. I'm pretty sure they provide you with some samples too. There's far to much info to "study", they just want to make sure you no how to find the info. Your clients/ officials will want the same, so no shortcuts. I don't like review sessions that tell you "they always ask this question, the answer is (c)" ... lazy
![]() As far as experience, I think its just consecutive full time 3 years or a shooling/fulltime hybrid equivalent. You also need to supply a "Letter of Attestation" from a PE, Contractor or Arch. |

Re: Unrestricted Csl For Ma.
Hi TommyCon,
I am in Western MA and want to take the CSL exam. I've read a few posts about prep classes vs just organizing the book. How can I get some tips on how to organize the book for success? Any suggestions would be appreciated. thanks |

Tony
Depending on each individual, Classes can be helpful by giving exposure to the things TommyCon mentions, (even if it some of the methods are a kind of short cut) and others who may come from a different construction background than you. I took the test '95 ish, at that time you could secure whatever you wanted into the book, maybe the same now? Best thing is to familiarize yourself with the code book so you know where to look for a particular question. If you still can, add a general index inside the covers to quickly find the items you need. While reading a page or paragraph Highlight specific sentences/sections that answer the questions. That way when you have to find it during a test you don't need to read through all the legal mumbojumbo Last edited by Aframe; 12-01-2009 at 10:07 PM. |

Thanks Aframe,
regarding "While reading a page or paragraph Highlight specific sentences/sections that answer the questions." Which questions are you refering to? Is there a sample test? |

Re: Unrestricted Csl For Ma.
class is a waste of money. I just tabbed the book and took the test. I just put in a sticky note at the beginning of each section and labeled the note

I heard that tabbing was a good method, good to hear it confirmed by you as well

Re: Unrestricted Csl For Ma.
Its the only way, you will be lost otherwise. A lot of it is common sense that you SHOULD know, but there are also a lot of mundane questions that require EXACT numbers where in the field you would approximate and be over kill

Re: Unrestricted Csl For Ma.
I mean while you read through the code book about railing heights, for example, highlight the height or other specific info you may be asked on a test. Because of the way the codes are worded it takes a paragraph to tell you 36" height and 4" opening between balusters. This is just a simplistic example but see where I going.
I don't know about sample tests. To start. Make up your own questions. Ask your coworkers. As you go through your work day think about the tasks your doing. You may think that you are just nailing down the subfloor, but there is a reason your using adhesive and nailing 8" in the field and 6" on the perimeter. |
