I'm looking to get my license in NJ. Can anybody tell me the process for this? Do I need to get a license in a particular county if that's where im doing my work?

Department of consumer affairs is a good place to start. Every contractor doing business in the state must have a home improvement contractors number. I believe the original fee was $90. It must be renewed every year. It also eliminated the need to aquire a merchantile license in individual municipalities. As for a NJ builders license, I think the same department must be contacted.

White registration plates are now the rage in NJ
apparently North Carolina is issuing drivers licenses for New Jersey drivers now.

...and I heard that New Jersey home improvement licenses are really easy to get, no experience required, no exams, etc. All you do is send in $90 and you get a license for a year? Sounds almost too easy.

That's right, the state only wants the jingle, doesn't matter if you're a hack.

Now, get prepared for at least two occasions where you will receive a notice of incomplete information. I'd be shocked if you get your registration card in less than 4 months.

If I'm not mistaken, you can pull permits before you actually receive the card. You should receive a confirmation of application or something, if I remember correctly.

There has to be some compensation between people who actually know there stuff and salesman who have general contracting licenses who literally can't hit a nail into a piece of wood. I have seen GC's in Florida and California who are really salesman and aren't craftsman by any means.
I think it's in a way better that New Jersey has this approach because when I see salesman who have general contracting licenses it blows me away. Atleast it's a fair game, salesman vs. real contractors running a construction company, but the only draw back is that the hacks are out there.

it is really ridiculous. I couldn't believe how easy the licensing is. I got my license when they first started it in 05 I believe. Its really sad that NJ takes the money and has no organized testing for a home improvement contractor. Every drunk hack that is out of work right now is registering a business and working for pennies in jersey right now. I am now in sunny Florida where I have to buy $500 in books and study for a $125 exam just to get a license to install siding and windows. I dont event want to talk about the requirements for a residential contractor. Its insane with credit and background checks, residency, and a sponsor.
Centaur1, are you currently licensed?

Vineland area, although most of my work from 85-02 was in the ocean City area.
