You can be a registered home improvement contractor without having a NJ builders license. The builders license is required to be a GC building new homes. I believe the GC must have the HIC registration too, in order to pull a permit. Not positive on the details on that. That may just pertain to renovations.

Right, it the H.I.C. requirements don't pertain at all to new home builders.

Lone, I'm pretty sure there's no license as in taking a test, it's more like a registration and that's related to warranty protection for the buyer. On the other hand, electrical and plumbing requires testing.

That is how it's been explained to me in the past, just send in your check and required paperwork to be a licensed new home builder.
If the new home builder wants to pull a renovation permit, he will need a HIC registration number.

It looks like it's really easy to get a New Jersey home improvement license, right. No exams, experience requirements etc.

This guy disappeared from radar. I don't think he had the permits.
It may work to get the Nj license anyway......costs less than some of the local print advertising I've been looking at...

Re: Nj License - 1 Day Job

I've been looking into going over the bridge into NJ, and I read the registration requirements for HIC, and they are saying I need to list a place of business in NJ...am I incorrect in this?

Correction:
"An agent for service of process is the person or corporation in New Jersey authorized by your business to
accept legal papers on behalf of your business. If you are a corporation, limited liability company or a limited
partnership you are required to have a registered agent/agency for service of process."

What type of agent or agency are they talking about?

Pretty much a joke....but the State does the punchline.
[That's where you get to pay for the registration ]

Re: Nj License - 1 Day Job

The NJHIC registration is actually a good thing in my opinion. It basically does the same thing as municipal merchantile licenses, but I don't need one for every coastal city that I do work in anymore.
In order to qualify, you must have a legitamate business with proof of liability insurance. I believe the form is available online through the Department of Community Affairs. You cannot pull a renovation permit without a registration number.

It wouldn't be much of a renovation w/o the mechanical trades.

Replacing a tired, old deck wouldn't require any mechanical subs to my knowledge, but it would require a HIC registration number to pull the permit. Roofing, siding, replacement windows, as well as many other non-mechanical improvements also apply.
