I just got my NYC license this past week. You need to file an application for the HIC license and an application for a NY salesperson license. There is a 30 question exam, fingerprinting ($75), filing to be part of the HIC Trust ($200), workers comp forms, roster of employees, proof of address and a few other simple forms. Everything is found on the DCA website. Everything has to be filed at the Dept. of Consumer Affairs downtown. It cost about $400 in all...Its dealing with the City of NY so its a pain... I was there almost 3 hours and the the exam only took 11 minutes...

That would be funny right there. NY has no state wide licenses required. Some locallities have their own laws. NYC is one example.
If you come upstate you will find no licenses required except in some cities for plumbers and electricians.
I guess the best way to find out is to tell us where you are going to do business.

Each NY county has their own licensing requirements. Some counties only require a license for plumbing and electrical.

You'll have to go to each county's website where you think you'll want to do business and view their licensing requirements (if any).
