License Required???

I am considering opening a business in Maryland in which I only install crown molding and window/door trim. Does anyone know if I will need an MHIC license for this?

Re: License Required???

Hang in there, somebody should be along. You might want to mention counties/towns/cities as many have different requirements/licenses.

Re: License Required???

It's $1000 in MA, too.

Get the HIC. Alot of business comes in after you've gotten in to the house to do a small job. Customer likes your work and decides he needs a set of shelves in the garage or basement, wants a new mantle for the fireplace, can no longer live without the home office of his dreams, etc... Don't limit your earning potential just because you think that you're "only" going to be cutting and nailing up some nice trim.

Pay the fee, get the certificate, go to work. (That's worth almost half a nickel.)

Re: License Required???

You will need at least a business license to get started and then you go for your contractors. That way you can have some right offs on your taxes. Most states have a handy man license you can grt for about 40,00 a year but there is a limit on your bids Calif is 500,00 and you can go to court with that. But the ho pays for all materails or you may only be able to charge by the hour go down to city hall and find out

Re: License Required???

To operate any home improvement business in the state of Maryland you will need to get a home improvement license (MHIC). This includes $20.00 jobs or $200,000.00 jobs. The Maryland Home Improvement Commission has a very useful website (google MHIC) that outlines the requirements of licensing including proof of experience, financial solvency, certificate of good standing from Dept. of Assessments and Taxation, registered trade name, and proof of liability insurance. The website is also used by homeowners/consumers to check the license status of contractors. And believe me, homeowners use it!! There is also a complaint area for people to report contractors operating without a license. If you are going to operate, operate legally.

Re: License Required???

yes you have to have it in Maryland. Pain in the But. I like Delaware much better. $75 and 15 minutes online. Never have to leave the house.
