How Long In CT To Get A License?

I looked into getting a License in CT last year and never followed through with it. The northern part of CT is about an hour from my office and just outside of my primary service area but if the job is good we will travel. I just received a website lead from a guy in RI who is moving over the border.

I was wondering how long it takes to get a license or home improvement card so I can sell a door and window job.

I want to say about 6 weeks. I had forgoten that sales people as well as the company need a license in Connecticut and last year I had my 2 sales people apply for thiers and I think it took 6 weeks.

You probably already know this but you go through the Dept of consummer protection, occupational licensing.

If I sell the job myself do I need both licenses? The cost really doesn't bother me so much as the wait.

From what I remember, no, but I really dont know for sure. At one time you absolutly needed three. One for the company, one for the contractor of record, and one for the sales person if the owner was not the sales person.

If you still need more than one I am sure you can aplly for both at the same time.

In CT you only need one license. But it is a fraud. Just a simple fee and registration. For no other purpose than to collect more state and local fees. Once registered, the local gov. will have your info to charge for other fees, which they do. Something like 250 for the state and 160 for the town.

Yup it is very easy here. I think it is 250.00 for a new registration and 160.00 for the yearly renewal. You only need one license. Not the multiple sales etc. Just your company can pull the license. It is also a good turnaround I think. About 5-10business days

That is the true crime here, isnt it?? It really is such a government scam. In my industry the gypsies go about thier buisness completely untouched. Other than contractors in fields that would have an effect on public safetey or health, the entire DCP license laws and system are a scam perpitrated on the legitimate business people and the consummer / tax payer in our state.

Because I work on the border area I recently applied and recieved my Westchester County contractor license. Now theres a license law to be tangled with. You have to appear, in person (the business owner) to pick up the packet. There is a written test given by appointment only on westechester DCP law and NY buisness law. Then you must complete the rest of the packet 100% perfect and submit the papaerwork with 90 ndays of taking the test, or you start all over again.

You have to have absolute proof of your companies standing by getting a certificate from the sec of state, 2 passport photos, a written naritive of your own background in the field for the license you are applying for, copies of all vehicles in the company that you will use in the operations so you can get the bumper sticker (that you must display on all the vehicles).

Bottom line, its no cake walk and its a butt load of cross the T's and dot the I's. And after all that there is still a 30 buisness day review where they may still reject it. Then there are like 4 governemnet entities that are allowed to enforce the law. They can take your tools and trucks, fine you, or put you in jail just for operating with out the license or ripping off a consummer.

I'm not in favor of over regulation and I beleive this is another way for unions to try and keep some of the private work unionized, but I have to admit we can use a simalar law in Connecticutr
