How Hard Is It To Tranfer A Builders License

I was asked by another contractor if I would be interested in getting my Builders License and then moving to another State since Michigan is in a state of total mess with the Tax Increases coming down the pipe starting in December, I don't need a License since I do 90% Plaster and Drywall and most of the painting I do is less then $600.00 I aint breaking any Michigan Laws, But I was wondering if anyone has moved from one State to another and tranfered their Builders License and what rings did you have to jump threw. The other thing is the last time I took the test they turned me down. Would I be wasting my time to try again I know I can pass the test I just don't want to spend the money and time onlt to be told Sorry again cause of what took place when I was 17 years old. Thanks.
I got this feeling these TAXES are gonna hurt more then they will help short term

Re: How Hard Is It To Tranfer A Builders License

You certainly would not be waisting your time in getting licensed. I would say it would even increase your business potential. Every state is going to be different regarding your license.

In FL for example you can get just a drywall license. You dont need to get a GC license unless you want it or need it. The nice thing about that is it limits what you do to a very small spread which helps with insurance. I am sure you know most states will require a GL policy and workman's comp or exemption depending on how you operate.

The bottom line is do some research and be willing to jump through some hoops. I will admit FL was a little nerve racking at times but worth it in the end. In my case the license is certainly not the end all be all but something nice to have.

One last note is that I am also looking to get my NC GC license. I will certainly let you know how that process goes here shortly.

Re: How Hard Is It To Tranfer A Builders License

I took the test back in 1998 and passed both parts, I should have no problem passing it again the thing I'm worried about is if they turn my application down, Well today they kicked in the Income Taxes from 3.9% up to 4.3% and now they are talking about raising the Sale Taxes from 6% to 7% Boy this Government in Michigan is something else. I was going to take the Residental Builders test. Then I plan on moving to another State.

I think what you are asking is if you have a Mi. contractor lic. how hard is to transfer it to another state. The answer is to my knowledge they don't transfer at all. Each state will have its own requirements and there own testing. The only advantage my cal. lic. gave me when I moved is it was used to verify my experience portion of requirements for my new lic.

Re: How Hard Is It To Tranfer A Builders License

Ok I was told that I would just have to take another test which I figured but that they would also take into consideration I have a Builders License from another State and it would be transfered, Cause I have read up on some States requirements, like Texas wants proof of 4 years, I think it was, working in construction, Well I've been in business for 22 years they still want proof.
I guess I have to have a license before they would believe me.
