Help On Test ?, Please!

Hey all
I'm another newbie here. I'm studying to take the contractors test and am stuck on a few questions. I would sure appreciate some help.
Here's one. A 16' X 80' X 6" patio. 50.00 per cubic yard for material and 5.00 per square yard labor cost. I get 1185.00 for material and 711.11 for labor for a total of 1896.00. The correct answer is 1986.00. What am I doing wrong? Thank you for your time.

I came up with your answer. Are there any rules for rounding?

Edit: 1915 if I round up.

Re: Help On Test ?, Please!

Maybe their answer is a typo (transposed numbers). I worked it first then looked at the answers you got, and came up with the same numbers.

Re: Help On Test ?, Please!

Thanks fellas, It dosen't give any information about rounding up or anything else. I passed it off as transposed numbers myself untill I went on throughthe tutorial and got to another question and couldn't get the "correct" answer on it either. I have to leave for work and will post the other question this evening. Thank you for the help. This is a great site!!!

I got your answer too, I think it's a typo.

The labor is correct but the material is under. Figure a 4" slab and divide by 81, this is a 6" slab so add 30% to your concrete. I get $2,031.10 without crunching the numbers.

Re: Help On Test ?, Please!

Skyhook, I think you need to crunch the numbers...

eg. if you increase from 4" to 6", that is a 50% increase not a 30% increase.

16' x 80' x 1/2' = 640 cubic feet/27 =23.704 cubic yds x $50 = $1185.185

I get 1896 also. Looks like a typo, the 8 and the 9 got switched.

What study materials are you using the prepare for the test?

I still like my price better.

Re: Help On Test ?, Please!

I sure do appreciate the responses fellas. Mexifornia, the study material is from National Contractors Pre-License Services, Knoxville TN.
I have another one for you. A block and brick building 19' x30' 6" with 10' walls. The wall diagram has 4" of brick, 2" air space and 8" block, brick on the outside of course. How many brick @ 7 per sq. ft and how many block @ 1.125 per sq. ft. I came up with 6930 brick and 1069 block. The answer in the tutorial is 6900 brick and 1039 block. I think it's odd that I'm 30 over on both.
I've been studying hard and the more I study the more shook up I get. One question was about icedam protection flashing. The IBC book says 3 ft and two of my other books says 2 ft up the roof from insulated walls, so 2 ft from the wall may be 3 ft or more depending on the overhang but they want a a,b,c or d answer. So the more I study the more I wonder!!
Sorry so long winded guys. And thank you for your support!

Re: Help On Test ?, Please!

Skyhook, I like your price better, too, but the price I really like is $50/yd for concrete! When was this test written? Or is that the price these days in Tn? Here, it's around CAD $155/yd

On those masonry ?'s thery're supposed to give a detail. 4w2h8L brick /w 1/2 joint. Block, mortar joints are included .8/8/16. Remember the state wants you to pick the BEST answer outta four mutiple choose answers. Most of those math ?'s are given to you w/a little preperation. Those other ?'s I hate it when they try to stump you w/ two correct answers. It' s what the state requires you to know. Some are BS ?'s that are unrelated to your trade. I d go through your study materials , weed out the ones you disagree with.{ those are gonna really shake you up]and have them corrected by the school. Remember BEST answer. Good luck.

Subia's got it right, BEST answer, go with what your first instinct is and chances are you got it right, I just finished the CSLB test and I did not agree with the test figures, so, I chose the closest one I felt was right. In CA they don't tell you what questions you got wrong, just pass or fail. If you know your trade relax, the test is easier than you think it is going to be, the LAW portion you need to study for, it's the challange since most guys writing the test are tradesman and not admin clerks it's not as natural for the answers, they actually require thought.

Re: Help On Test ?, Please!

Thanks again for all the responces and advice. You all helped me calm down. Chris, I'm into the business law pretty deep now. It and OSHA are going to be the toughest I think. I'm scheduled to test 5/16, I'll let you all know howit goes.
Thanks W.B.

Re: Help On Test ?, Please!

If you add your thickened edge of about 12" wide by approximately 6" on 3 sides (80/16/16)you will get much closer...

Working slopes and waste in the corners.. well you get the idea....

Still need to order more than you will use.... Hmmmmm

Good luck!!
