Ga. Genaral Contractor License

I am a new upstart business and want to obtain a residential/ light commercial contracting license. The new requirements for application acceptance far exceed what I can provide on paper, however my practical experiance over the years and quality of contacts more than amply qualifies me to make this move. I'd like to know if anyone has any experiance and/or advice as to how lieniant the licensing board is with regard to new applicants. I would like to avoid submitting a request and and being denied, and possibly putting my name on a list of non qualified applicants. Any insight that anyone can provide will be greatly appreciated.

Re: Ga. Genaral Contractor License

Hi, Nello,

GA licensing is relatively new, so no one has extensive experience with it. I can tell you that I have heard that most have been denied or are taking months and months to get approved because they don't meet the requirements. Usually, the rules/laws for requirements are initially set by the legislature, with the licensing board determining the standards that meet the laws. So there is not much leeway for them to be lenient. They also have to ensure they are fair to all applicants to protect themselves from any discrimination or other legal issues. So, I wouldn't expect them to be lenient. If you don't meet the requirements and qualifications, you don't get licensed, plain and simple. That is how Florida is and likely how GA is.

To protect your future opportunities, I'd suggest waiting until you fully qualify. I know that on the FL application, you are asked if you've ever been denied for a license. Answering "yes" is a big black mark against you and requires you to jump through a lot more hoops.

Again, I'm not nearly as familiar with the GA process and rules as I am with FL, but I know they are trying to meet and surpass FL in its contractors' standards.

Hope this helps!
Kristie

Hi; I've been through the procedure and it is really not as bad as I thought. On the experience affidavit part 3 just put your name as employer and supervisor, on part 4 put your name as employer. Just be honest and try to get a few letters of reference from past clients. The test is the most difficult part of the whole thing. Good luck!

What type of work are you going to do? The list of excluded trades is fairly large, which means you don't need a license for those trades on the list.

Re: Ga. Genaral Contractor License

I have done "Handyman" business in S. Ga. for years and our county uses an "Occupational Tax License" with a "Special Skills Trades" classification. I have four (4) counties which reciprocate my "License". I looked into the new GA. General Contractor license so I would know that I would cover all areas of work I do. Multiple phone calls to the State resulted in them telling me that I did indeed have to submit written proof of at least four (4) years working under a previously licensed General Contractor under the old rules. This I cannot provide. My thirty-six (36) years of Industrial Maintenance Tech and two Associate Degrees in Engineering were no help at all. I've talked to some General Contractors who were grandfathered in and they say Georgia is really getting tough on their new license procedure. The new Ga. State Electrical and Plumbing License procedure are about the same. Thanks, David
