Re: California Licensing

hey Guru, just want to thank you in advance, even if you cant answer this question your past answers have been helpful.

I have been an unlicensed handyman for about 6 years now(did handyman work with someone else for about 5 years in addition to that), just getting jobs by word of mouth. Im looking to be able to legally take more than 500 per job. I can get a lic person to sign the form. Do you think I would be able to quallify. I have done everything from plumbing, flooring, painting, not much i havent done.

Any advice on how to go forward would be wonderful. I would like to take my jobs to the next lvl.

Re: California Licensing

To anyone who can answer this...

I just bought the quickpass study material. There is a slueth of test questions. Can anyone tell me what THEY focused on in the quickpass and was it helpful to them during the test? There are, in total, a couple of thousand questions and it would be nice to be able to narrow it down some. Thank you!

Re: California Licensing

I have a c-27 license held in my corporate name. I am forced to dissolve my corp due to IRS issues. My sons have formed a new corp and I am going to work for them as an employee, but I will not be an owner of the new corp. Would I apply for a new license with an exemption from taking the test based on prior experience? Would it be best to hold the license as an individual? Please shed some light on the possible scenarios. Thank you in advance for your help.

You don't need the bond until you pass the tests.

As for a recommendation.........just watch your mail box for the 6 months....the postmaster will hate you soon enough and you will have enough people offering you bonds, insurance, etc., etc.

Thx for bonding info.

Yea I've already started getting offers in the mail. Just like insurance companies I'm sure they aren't all the same. Just wondering anyone had some experience with this issue.

Re: California Licensing

my corp is licensed in AZ as a General but not in CA... we have opportunities available in CA but not the time or qualifications to complete a CA license...
Are we allowed in ANY way to hire/team up with a person who DOES have a CA General Contractor license and bid on jobs with OUR corporate name showing as the company bidding on the job?

Hello all! First let me apologize for my absense. Been a real rough couple of months for me and for some reason I haven't been getting the usual notifications to thread replies.

I'm going to answer every question I've missed. Please forgive me. I want to be here for you and I've dropped the ball.

I passed the law, luckily but failed the general by 3 questions. Can you recommend to me the best way to pass this next time? What study material have you heard of that works well, according to UNKNOWN sources... un huh. Any input would be great!

Thanks!
Have you retaken the exam? Please let me know if I can still help.

This one seems good "Academy License Center Contractor School" but... again, without the referals from anyone out there, it's difficult to say.

Also, whatever school/home study course you know as being good, please let me know!
I know of some great materials that can be customized. Click on my name then follow the link.

Yes, submit the application, study your materials while it is in process, after it has passed review the test date will be issued. From start to finish it could be any where from 6-8 weeks from app submit to test date.

The rules have changed on retake exams. I believe you can reschedule right away after the first fail, but then you have to wait 30 or 60 days for the 2nd retake. I'll have to look that up again. Anybody here know for sure?

Like I said above, I'll have to find out for sure myself, but there was a time when you could take the test as many times as you needed within an 18 month period.

Chances are you've probably found someone to help you with this, but Heck Yeah you most certainly qualify. Don't list individual projects on your work experience, just list the type of work. If going for the B you will list Framing and two unrelated trades. ** My experience includes framing, rough/finish, electrical, rough/finish, concrete form and pour, grading...etc.

If you still need help, please email me.

So you want to file for a new license under your sons corporation and you will be an employee? Will you be the qualifier for this new license, aka RME? To do this you would file the New License App Waiver. No need to show experience, the CSLB will see your previous license and will issue the number after all fingerprints have cleared, fees paid, bond issued etc.

Does that help?

Hello, I'm sure you've already been issued the license, but for those who don't know, the bond must be in place before the number can be issued. You can wait to get your bond until after you pass your exams. Some Surety companies file electronically with the CSLB and have a 24 hour turn around. Click on my name below an follow the link. You can find more bonding info thru there.

side note... bonds issued to new applications have a 90 shelf life. If you do not pass your exams within 90 days of the bond being issued it will go void and you'll have to reapply for a new bond.

Exactly... as I've stated before (and I dont mind repeating myself) the questions can be asked any number of ways. The exam database is 3000 questions. Not 3000 different questions but 3000 of the same questions asked many different ways. Know the answers and how to get to that answer no matter how its asked.

Good point... as a licensing tech I put somewhat less stock in the experience provided because I knew the exam would weed out the ones who were less than truthful in their application.
