If we get our bond, can we get our license # off the cslb site and get started or do we have to wait until it's sent out to us? I don't get it. I just want to get started ASAP is all, should I pass of course. I turned my finger prints in a month ago, no problems there I'm sure but now I'm worried I'm going to be sitting around for another 3 months while the cslb does whatever stuff they do to finish us up with the process. Worried.... thanks!
Bond the same day and working?? I doubt that. You can submit your bond app before you take the exam so that it is in the system when you take the test, but.... it will take 2-4 weeks before your license number is issued. By law, you can not contract for work until the number is issued.

The number will hit the CSLB web site the second it is issued. So keep checking their site. Your pocket license and wall cert will take a few days to mailed to you. There is a BBB office in LA that takes pleasure in calling people within minutes (I don't know how they do it and it TICKS me off when they call my clients) of the number being issued so you may get a call from them. They just want you to join their sad group and send them money. I say don't waste your time. (sorry... just a little editorial. hahaha)

Good Luck!

Re: California Licensing

When my company got licensed in Cali I got 5 calls within no more than 20 minutes from the BBB. I was checking the CSLB site often and the BBB called me before I found out myself.

Here's one more...

I'm taking my exam tomorrow. I studied about 900 questions and answers, know them perfectly. I studied the CSLS for the trade and a CD with another 378 or so law/business questions. What are my odds, should I know these inside out, of passing the general contractor's exam? I've always used these types of databases for every state exam and have always been the first one out but people on this site are speaking of how the test is changed every so often. I really doubt that! A state run testing center is NOT going to change the tests too often, maybe once every 10 years I presume? Thanks!

That just fries my shorts. I spend months with clients getting their license, sometimes pulling in favors from my inside connections. Many calls and emails, waiting for the day to call and say WE DID IT! Here is your number.... only to be told that some J-O from the BBB has already called.

I sent an email to this clown and told him that if he wants to put in all the time and effort to get the license then he can call the client, otherwise he needs to butt the F out! Of course the wuss didn't reply.

Ok, rant over. We should probably bash the BBB in another thread.

Tomorrow as in today 4/21 or tomorrow 4/22?

Anyway, DO NOT memorize the questions provided by the school!! The chances of seeing the same questions worded the same way is slim to less than none. Remember the answers. Example, if the answer is four, understand the different ways of achieving that answer. 1+3, 2+2, 6-2 etc. The state has a pool of about 3000 questions that they pull from randomly to compile any exam.

Good Luck!

Re: California Licensing

Okay,

I took the general today, passed the law but failed the trade. I knew about 900 questions/answers but about 25 total out of the 235 questions were on there! Really upsetting. As a result, I'm screwed completely! I was planning on lots of stuff but now I have to move to Florida around the first of the month. I would like to finish up with the exam but when I called today, I was told that I can't take the exam in another state. Is that true? And if so, WHY? I've taken lots of state exams in Ca that were from other states. What, is Ca too good to recipriocate? Anyway, I may have to fly in for the day of my exam from Fl cause I really want to pass this as I may come back to Ca in a couple of years. The fact that I didn't see hardly any questions on that test from the stupid study material is unreal. I bought it from someone and he used it and passed super easy he said. I don't get it. He also took the class but... Anyway, thanks for your answer on this one.

Re: California Licensing

After I do pass the Ca exam, if I'm in Florida, how much reciprocity do they have? Do I get to skip some of the nonesense if I want to get my FL license? Thanks!

Re: California Licensing

I'm sorry you didn't pass.

True, you can only take the test in a CA testing center. It's not an internet based exam unfortunately.

CA has reciprocity with three states. Arizona, Nevada & Utah.

You mentioned CSLS. Is that the service the study materials came from? Does the material say it is from Television Education?

I've helped people from New York to Hawaii get their CA license and all have to travel here to take the exam. It certainly adds cost and time to the process but until the CSLB catches up to the 21st century, that's the way it's going to be. Email me any time if you need more help, assistance or advice. I'd be happy to help any way I can. Click on my name below to contact me.

Re: California Licensing

Hi Guru,

I have a question about responsibilities of being an RMO. If I become the qualifier for a company would I be responsible for all employees actions who are working under my supervision? I hear that some of these guys are not willing to follow the rules. This is a large corporation, I will have about 15 people under my wings. What do you think?

Thank you for your help.

Hello Sign Fabricator. I apologize for my tardiness in replying.

You would not be responsible for their "actions" but you would be responsible for the work they perform. As the qualifier for the license it would be your job to ensure that the work they are doing conforms to the plans/specs, bldg. code and to the terms of the contract.

If the employees/installers are not following the plans or doing the job to code that would be your responsibility to correct.

Re: California Licensing

I have been working with under a GC for the past 2 years. The owner is thinking of retiring. He is a sole proprietor.

I want to take over his business and license. Is that possible? And do I have to take the test and have 4 years experience?

Thanks for your help.

Thank you for your question...

You cant take over a sole owner license, you'd have to apply for your own. You would have to take the test and show 4 years of experience. Do you have another 2 years experience or college credit to apply towards those 2 years?

Re: California Licensing

We are currently researching the solar installation business and want to get our C-46 license. We currently have a General 'B'. No one in our business has actual field experience but two partners have lots of solar manufacturing and technical know how.

What is the most efficient and simplest route to get our c-46?

Applying for an additional class is easy to do, but somebody would have to show 4 years of experience. The experience can be hands on or supervisory, but manufacturing and technical know how may not be enough. Did the person with the manufacturing experience supervise installation of their product?

Hello Sign Fab, sorry for not replying sooner.

If you are submitting sole owner experience you could break it down by years. John Smith certifys for X period of time, Jay Jones certifys for Y period of time, etc. That way they wont be perjurying themselves.
