Unfortunately there is no way around not taking the exams again. You would either have kept the inactive license current or have held the classification for at least one day in the last 5 years. After 5 years you have to take the exams again. You can, however, have the old number reissued to you.
Also, you will not be required to show experience on the application.
Sorry, but you were given correct info by the CSLB.

License Guru,
You seem to be the man with the knowledge on licensing!
I had left my General B license become expired. Has been inactive since 1996. Am i able to apply again for a c54 Tile license without showing experience? Ive been doing tiling for years on my own jobs but never worked for a company. Is it possible to get a c54 license then??
Thanks in advance
Liam

Hey Liam,
Welcome to CT.
To answer your question.... Yes.. and No.
You can apply to get your old number back and the B classification without showing experience. But unless you had the C54 on the license as well you'll need to show experience. Either way you'll need to take the law/bus and trade exams again.
You can apply for the C54 showing your experience as "self-employed" so no need to show pay stubs or w-2's (never required anyway).
I can help with your application if you like, or I offer a free app review service to all CT members if you'd like for me to look it over for you. I also offer exam prep materials for the law/bus and all trade exams. Click on my name below for more info.
If you have any questions, or need advice, you can ask away in this thread. I'll be happy to help you!

The questions for the exams are taken from all of those materials. There is no way to nail down which specific sections you should study. Having taken the test you should have a fairly good idea of what will be on the next exam.
Keeping in mind that you will most likely not see the same questions again.
I dont want to bash the CSLS product, but they do create their own materials and may (or may not) be the best product on the market. No "school" has all the answers to the test. That would be impossible as the CSLB has a very large pool of questions that they rotate from one exam to the next. My suggestion is always to memorize the answers, not the questions. The example I use is: 2+4=6, 10-4=6, 16-10=6. The answer to the problem is always 6 but the question is asked several different ways. Don't memorize the questions.
I do offer a kit that is extremely up-to-date and the most comprehensive available. Click on my name below for more information.
Good Luck on your re-test!

That's an excellent strategy, that's how I got my general ham ticket and passed the IFR written for flying. By the way, because of the federal freedom of information act, everyone knows the complete test pools for amateur radio and aviation tests. Too bad the state is not subject to the FOI laws.

There is a cultural difference in play here.
I am guessing the Batik is from eastern Europe. (By his speech patterns) He hasn't answered that yet so I could be wrong. But what I have experienced is the they tend to sound overly aggressive in their speech but mean well. Totally a cultural difference between here and there.
It does P me O that so many of them are here hacking, but Batik is tenacious and seems to want to do things the right way.
No offense Zinsco, but you were right to tone it down and you did it by your own accord-thats good.
We need to focus on the hacks here from presumably the same area taking our jobs for half price.

I doubt that anyone knows all of the material you referrence by heart, but you should have an overall knowledge of the codes & laws that pertain to your trade.
As I stated above, having taken the exams already you should have a good idea of what you need to focus on.

Deductive reasoning helps, on multiple choice questions it's best to first eliminate the answers that are obviously wrong. Then examine the remaining possible answers and determine which one seems the most reasonable. Also sometimes if you skip the questions, subsequent questions may provide clues to the previous question. Also make sure you actually comprehend the question, sometimes we rush and assume we understand the question, but we don't. So take your time. Tests are totally dependent on your memory and memory is greatly impaired if you are under stress, so relax and enjoy the test taking process...
