Re: California Licensing
Hi mackus!
What do you mean by "self perform"? A B license can do c-7 work as long as it is part of the overall project. A B license can not contract for c-7 work by itself.

Re: California Licensing
thx for the response. the overall scope of work is adding detention doors, cameras, electric locks and a complete replacement of the electronic control system in a prison. I know we spent along time getting our C7 lic and cant believe that a General Contractor Framing Lic Class B, would be able to perform this work without the use of C7 subcontractors. So i guess because the scope of work includes detention doors, bar grading on windows and the electronics replacement, he can perform this under his Class B lic?

Re: California LicensingQuote:
A general building contractor may take a prime contract or a subcontract for a framing or carpentry project. However, a general building contractor shall not take a prime contract for any project involving trades other than framing or carpentry unless the prime contract requires at least two unrelated building trades or crafts other than framing or carpentry. Does that help?

I'm sorry. Got caught up and forgot to reply.
Yes, he can still sign. He was at the journeyman level prior to licensure.

Re: California Licensing
The current processing time for new apps is less than two weeks. And test dates being given are for the 3rd week of August. So I think you could be sitting for the exam in 5-6 weeks.
Would you like me to review your app before you submit it? No charge to CT members.

Re: California Licensing
I have four years of solar electrical installation and service experience in Baja California Sur, Mexico, and I want to apply for a solar license in California. Will the State of California Contractors' License Board accept Certifications of Work Experience from my clients living in another country (All US Citizens living in Mexico)?
The CSLB web site wasn't clear on this. Thanks in advance for your answer. |

Re: California Licensing
I just finished reading this entire thread and I think I found my answer to the Mexican Experience question.
Now different questions: I have about 35 solar clients we've gained over the past four years, and three employees I directly supervise. All of this work was self-employed and performed in Mexico. Some of these were one-off jobs where we installed the system and that was it. Others are ongoing work where we continue to provide occasional repair and maintenance services as needed. Yesterday, I asked all 35 of them if they would be willing to sign a certification form. I already received 15 "Yes" replies as of this morning. Questions:

Re: California Licensing
Hello Alan and welcome to CT.
I'm going to give you my honest opinion here.... Don't use clients as certifiers. ![]() It would take a huge amount of project lists to come up with four years of experience!! And the chances of the CSLB giving you a full 4 years of credit is slim to none. They will review each and every project form and make their own determination as to whether or not this 4 day project should have taken 4 days or that 7 day project should have taken 7 days. AND they would take 1,2,3,4 weeks to review it all. Not to mention the utter hassle of having to complete a separate project list form for each and every client. Since the work was all self employed, check the self employed box on the work experience form of the app and have it signed by C-46 or C-10 contractor who is familiar with your work. Submit one form covering the minimum 4 year requirement. You can also use a business associate to sign. Just keep in mind they are signing under the penalty of perjury and must have first hand knowledge of your work.

Re: California Licensing
Durn. That's what I was afraid of.
I don't know if there even is a C-10 or 46 in all of BCS. I do know a couple of licensed GCs who know me but would that be acceptable certification? |

Re: California Licensing
Keeping with the honesty theme... I don't want to say yes or no. Because it all depends on the tech who is processing your app at the CSLB. The general rule is that an A or B can sign off on a C class. But solar is a different bread of cat. Most B licenses aren't doing solar, whereas some roofers C39 and/or electricians C10 or swimming pool C53 are doing solar. But a C39 and C53 can't be a C46 certifier.
Having said all that, if there is no one else to certify other than clients and a GC, I would go with the GC.

Re: California Licensing
This is a huge help. Thanks for that.
For those of you who may not have noticed (because he doesn't beat his own drum very much in this thread), Phil's name is linked at the bottom of each of his posts. He offers contractor's license test prep materials that can be purchased on line. I've already done a fair amount of research on these from several companies, and Phil's materials appear to provide the best value for the money. |
