Question

CA - General Contractor Name Change

I am in the process of incorporating my company and know that I have to change my B license from sole prop., to corp.. I have 2 questions that I want to research before I start the legal process of incorporation:

1. Though, when I got my license as an sp, there was no other company in my county using the name, I discovered that it is being used elsewhere in the state as a corp.. My current company name ends with "Construction". I have reserved the same name, through the Sec'y of State, using the ending "Construction Services", instead. Is that change going to be acceptable to the CSLB?

2. Once the corpoation is established, can I still operate under the original license, while the license name change is in process with the CSLB?

Hi Tom,

Yes, construction services will be ok with the CSLB. When you file for sole to corp, enter the biz name on the application, i.e. ABC Construction Services, Inc. dba: ####

Yes, you can continue to use the current biz name while your app is in process. Be sure to complete the CSLB form requesting the license number be transferred to the corp license. If it's not submitted with the app it will cause some delay because the tech will "reject" the app and request that you send the form.

Here's the link to the form: http://www.cslb.ca.gov/Resources/For...ateLicense.pdf
