CA Contractors: Is The CSLB Doing Their Job? Poll

As California contractors, what is your opinion of the CSLB?

Are they doing what they need to do to in order to protect the public and regulate the industry with resources available to them?

The CSLB is doing everything they can with what is available to them, unfortunately Unlicensed Contractors are a lot like regular criminals, they don't call the police saying they are going to commit a crime prior to doing so, with that they must be resourceful in catching these folks in the act, such as SWIFT as well as tips from other contractors and the general public.

Most times the general public doesn't give a damn, until it costs them money then all hell breaks loose and they want justice NOW! If you saw someone in your area having work done on their house would you help police the issues and check up on them? No, you wouldn't. Most people ignore what is being done outside the four corners of their property.

Can we as the contractor population do anything to change this? Yes, inform clients you are submitting proposals to about the laws of contracting, the need for someone who has been approved by the State, who has proven themselves through the means of credentials and testing, who has proper insurance coverage, proper business ethics, etc. Now for the truth, most licensed contractors abide by the above, especially the business ethics, but there is a small percentage that slip through the system and even with a license are very shaddy, look how many licenses get revoked for various reasons. Licensing isn't perfect, but it is a start.

So is the CSLB doing a good job, Yes, considering the tools they are given and the rules they must follow. Criminals and unlicensed contractors have no rules or code of ethics to follow. Keep up the good work CSLB and as unlicnesed contractors find new loop holes I hope you get corks to plug them.

Chris,

Good points there; I do think the CSLB is doing what they can with the enforcement resources they have.

However, if we really want to see the issue of Unlicensed contractors resolved we are going to have to rise up and address the issue ourselves. Part of the problem is that there is very little concensous among contractors on the to best way to resolve this issue.

What I would like to see is a many ads run in the paper, TV and radio talk news warning the public of the dangers to their families and property that can come from hiring unlicensed contractors. I think if enough of those campaigns were run and often, we'd begin to see a change in the public's perception of unlicensed contractors.

That's a great idea, offer to pay for it.
