Any Reason To Get Both Personal/individual License And Business License

I'm preparing to get a NC general contractor license. In NC, they allow you to get a personal license and serve as a qualifier for one business license. I will be setting up an LLC and will be the qualifier for that business. My question is, should I also still get a individual license? Can anyone think of a reason for doing so if I anticipate all contracting will be done under the LLC? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I see no reason you would want to run under more than one LLC. This is very unlikely. I always say keep it simple. Less chance for mistakes and lower cost. Good luck with it. By the way I have 3 dba's: Masters Roofing, Masters Exteriors, and Masters Construction all under one LLC.

Re: Any Reason To Get Both Personal/individual License And Business License

Thanks for the input Chuck. The question was more should I also get a personal contractor's license, it would just be a license in my name and not in a business name. In NC, they will only let a person get a license in their own name and one company. So I could get a contractor's license as Joe Doe and also JD Contracting, LLC. Not sure if this would serve any purpose though. The only thing I can think of is if JD Contracting went out of business for whatever reason maybe it would be easier to transfer my personal license to another company. Or maybe if I wanted to do something outside of the company I would need the personal license but I'm not sure when I would want to do that. Just looking input from anyone who can think of something I haven't thought of.

To answer your question i think it is good to have botb. But it is not necessary. Because the business is in your name.

I would not do that unless you are interested in doing business on your own as a individual separate from your company. You can always get a new qualification based on the exams you took if you leave this company. You have four years between removing yourself as a qualifier of a company to use the scores again.

Having an individual license will mean you have to keep insurance on yourself separately as if you were doing work separately. It is money wasted if you are not.
