Zero Tail Swing?

Salesman are saying in 5 years there will be no regular configured machines offered as a standard machine that the market will convert over to the zero tail-swing machine. This is in all classes of machines except mining. Up to 120,000 lb. machines

What do you think?

Have you any experience with 200 size and up machines in zero tail swing?

I'm thinking of starting to rent a machine with the possibility of buying in the 200 to 220 size their seems to be a little push to market these and maybe a price break talking to a couple different dealers. I don't like the looks for one thing. And the 314 Cat we're renting the cab is small and uncomfortable.

Nick, Tonight is your lucky night, all our machines are Zero swing. Love them! Kobelco's SR200, SR115, & SR35. Of course I love them cause of all the tight lots we work on. I get nervous now getting in anything with a tail end on it. Nick , let me know if you're short handed sometime I'll come and operate a machine for you.

Re: Zero Tail Swing?

I would like to have a zero-swing machine. It would be nice doing swales and sanitary/storm lines along easements. I did operate a Cat 321CLR. It was a nice machine, but the cab was a little tight for me. I like alot of room to stretch out my legs.

Re: Zero Tail Swing?

The company I work for in St.Louis here, has nothing but zero tail track hoes. Komatsu 228's, 128's, and a 308. When I first saw them, I didn't think much of them. Thought maybe they would be too boom heavy for lifting heavy stuff. To my surprise, their lifting capabilities are very impressive! Besides that, lifting things, and maneuvering around in tight spots is so much better since the booms on them lift past the cylinders verticle. Once you've run them awhile you honestly don't want to go back to the big ol counter-weight that sticks out!! One thing on the Komatsu's, if you decide to get one and get a quick coupler for it, there may be clearance issues with the bucket and cab!

Re: Zero Tail Swing?

I have a few pros and cons on the zero swing. First with the pros. Like everyone else I like not having to worry about swinging into stuff. Its nice pay attention more to the guys in the hole and utlities. I also like the way the boom goes back farther. Now for the cons. Being 6-1 I dont like the cab size. Lack of track power. Little tippy with a full bucket and stick all the way out. I have spent the most time on 235 and 150 kobelco's. I did run a new 308 komatsu a few years ago that was balanced really well and had good track power. The only other bad thing with zero swings is they go from a 30-32000lb to a 52000lb machine. I would like to see one just under 50,000 so we could move it with our tag.

Re: Zero Tail Swing?

I would love to switch over to all zero-tail swing since we work in mostly urban enviroments. It just seems in the course of equipment hunting it is easier to find a good deal in the traditional excavator market.
