Do some door knocking and see if anyone would be able to use your demo service. Maybe to knock over a shed, tree, someones wife....you never know, you may be able to make some of the payment back and the neighbors will like ya, just a little more. Good luck.

Re: Work To Do

Grav,
Go with the Cat312, stay away from a rubber tired machine for what you want to do, and IMO a 10k# machine would have been to small. Good Luck, have fun, keep any little ones far away and under someone's supervision. Seems like every year I hear of a child getting crushed by a machine due to carelessness or not being aware that they were close by.Post us some pics when you do it! When you're all done go down to the local pub and have good old dad buy you a few. But don't go back to operate machine again afterwards.

Re: Work To Do

let me just ask, you will be cutting them down first right? If so then just dig around the stump and reach under it and pull it out, shake it all about, that's how we do the hokey.... wait I got carried away. Seriously just pull it out, shake it or bucket the dirt off and throw it in the dumpster. Simple!

If not, guys generally dig around the base a little and push the bastard right over. Pushing high up on the tree gives you the best leverage. It's very unsafe, and if you dig out too much before you push it over, you could have it topple over backwards (or any direction) onto the cab. I guess you need to get a feel for it. I removed many of my own trees using that method, since I wasn't confident in my tree felling abilities with a chainsaw. I made the mistake of burying many stumps, and now I have a spot that's sinking in the back yard. The termite man wasn't exactly excited to learn that I have a pile of buried stumps in the yard either.

Re: Work To Do

Grav,
Let me just add you can use the excavator to assist you to fall the tree where you want it to fall, although I think you should have more experience on the machine, sorry. Hopefully you can just let them fall in the direction that you notch them.

Re: Work To Do

Well if I can find some people who want fire wood, i'll let them cut them down and ill come in behind them I suppose

I may knock one down atleast just for kicks and giggles though

I dont think I feel too comfortable using the excavator for assistance either...

....I feel like Im 10 again waiting for christmas morning....ofcourse then I was waiting for a tonka toy.....this is a little nicer!

Re: Work To Do

I may be getting too carried away when asking if I should attempt this....so dont hesitate to tell me to calm down!

By the time we have everything ready to start clearing the property we may have the building plans as well. Its gonna be a really small house from the looks of it, but its gonna probably have "crawl space"....I use quotations because it looks like they're gonna want about 5 feet of crawl space.

Should I give things a whirl of digging this? Or am I out of my league?

Re: Work To Do

Well the most important thing will be there, the machine! You can do it! Would be handy if you rented a laser and had someone to work with you to help you. I also have the magnetic mount receiver that mounts on the boom, you just go by the lights and illiminates the extra person. Rent the machine for the week and go for it. Any questions just ask away, thats what these forums are all about. I think!

Re: Work To Do

Peladu’s prediction:

gravtyklz 1st day; Can’t wipe the smile off of his face, and is having more fun than would be considered normal. Pictures are taken of him sitting in it.

gravtyklz 2nd day; Getting the hang of it better, still figuring out what all the levers do. Able to maneuver it without bouncing out of the seat.

gravtyklz 3rd day; Becomes over confident with machine and says his first “uh-ooh”

gravtyklz 4th day; Gets a headache from all the noise, and has a sore arse from the seat, and a blister on his thumb.

gravtyklz 5th day; Totally pissed, “WTF? This should have been done already. WTF, I have to pay how much to fill this thing up with diesel. WTF, when will it end?”

gravtyklz 30 days later; Glad I did it, but never again.

How big is the lot and how deep can you dig? If it were me, I'd bury that stuff in a heart beat provided I could dig down 12...15 maybe 20 feet. Maybe shallower depending on the lot. I'm with jmic, get a track excavator and go to town. Personally, I'd want a bucket on the hoe and a little loader to push/carry the stuff around.

Re: Work To Do

Well Im looking at a Cat 312 to rent....so I can dig to around 20 feet with it....

But if your asking about ground conditiion....I have no idea whats underneath that....I just know the cat can dig that far.

This may be a silly question since landfills do this....but is it legal to bury stuff like that on a lot? Will it cause sink holes or anything like that?

If I buried it...obviously it would take a while to dig that big of a hole.....would I end up needing it longer than a week with that extra work?

Im not sure how much it costs to get a couple dumpsters there for a couple days, but if having the excavator a extra day, or for however long.....that may justify burying it?

Re: Work To Do

The days of burying things of that nature are dwindeling down I believe. I don't think you'de want to be burying cars and or parts or debris from trailer and having someone videoing you, then again we wouldn't see you on 60 minutes would we? A couple of stumps maybe, but even to many of them can come back to haunt you. I'de say no to any burying.

Re: Work To Do

jmic, I once again agree with you (and its getting old).

Throughout the years that buried heap will corrode and decompose and end up in the well water. Then Barbara is sitting there wondering why her child was born with seventeen toes and one eye.

Re: Work To Do

My brother's father in law is in the excavating business. I think im gonna try to tag along with him a few times before I rent the excavator.....

He uses a crawler loader, and a backhoe....so its different.....but still....ide like to see a basement, or footer project done from start to the end so I can have some practical experience.

Yeah....if it was just open land....ide bury it all....but this is a 1.75 acre lot.
