Women

Are there any women working in your area as an operator, truck driver or laborer in excavation or site work?

There is one woman driving a log truck in our area. There is a woman driver of a concrete tank supplier. I don't know of any operators or laborers.

We have had two women apply for jobs as laborers. They never returned the applications.

Why aren't there women entering these areas?

Would you teach your daughter your work if she showed interest?

I have three daughters, all can operate a skid-steer but none wanted to go any further. My wife can back a tractor trailer almost anywhere but she won't drive it down the road. Teaching any girl to drive or operate has always been easier in my opinion than boys. No male ego to get in the way.

The only trouble I see(and I have worked with women),,is that you teach them they are good at it and work hard,,,but ,,they get in the "family way",,and your looking for another employee,,,and also,,if she is half good looking every guy there want's to be the guy that puts her in the family way and now the guys don't concentrate on what they are doing....lol

I had a purty 25 yr. old blond , beauty driving my tri- axle back in '86'. She worked for me for 5 yrs., could drive circles around the other drivers I had. Never had a problem hiring out that truck with her, did alot of night time paving and she'd be back in to run the truck for me if I needed it the following day. Actually when she had downtime she'd start waxing the truck and then all production would slow way up.

Also know a builder whose wife runs the excavator and over sees the excavation on their sites. Also know a paving contr. whose wife drives tri-axle for them

Hmm......the only women that I see around here are sign holders.

There was one the other day that was working for a local paving contractor. Damn, she was smoking, I almost stopped and asked her name......lol

This is a tough subject. A lot of women come and go in the trades. Seems like the ones who can last are the ones who know how to handle men the best. Who aren't offended by off-colored jestures etc.
I'm thinking of a particular woman who I worked with on and off with over a period of 25 years. She was a big girl, not fat , but tenacious and always won the respect of her fellow workers. She would work when many of her male counterparts were sent home. She was a knowledgeable "steady Eddy" what she lacked in strength she made up for in brain. She made the boss money consistently.

Being a woman in the trade, I've done what ever it took to get the job done, didn't really have a problem with co-workers, but almost caused a couple accidents as people (guys) are shocked to see us out there on heavy equipment. Around here, unfortunately, the women I see looking for jobs have no clue as to what they are getting into or they are "looking for some outside work" in my opinion they want a tan & people to look at them. I've been around the business for a long time as my dad & grandpa started it and now it's me & my brother. I now do the take-off and estimating work as well as the rest of the office work, don't have much time to play in the dirt.
