Winter???

I'm getting sick of this winter. It hasn't been extremely cold and we haven't had a lot of snow here in CT. The ground has been covered with snow or ice in some way since Christmas it seems. The temperatures have been up and down. It's rained a lot. The sunny days can be counted on one hand.

Add to that, that the phone has been silent for new work since October. And the constant barage of bad news by the press about the economy.

Sheesh! Time for this winter to be over!

I pay no attention to the gloom and doom on the news, all they do is scare people enough to make things as bad as the say they will be. (People stop spending because they hear on the news how bad the economy is.....but if no one is spending it will only get worse.)

But I am ready for some better weather. Almost 60 degrees here and sunny, but way too wet on all of my jobs to be able to do anything!

Re: Winter???

Hey, when the bills are due and there are no prospects in sight, that is depressing. The news is telling you that you won't be getting anymore phone calls, that is even worse.

I just got sick of hearing it all and turned off the news (who can stand it anyway? brittany, the economy, the freakin' elections... AD NAUSEUM).

I listen to talk radio and a couple of the shows i listen to are saying that the media is fueling it into a crisis all by themselves. Just like with the housing market.

Unemployment numbers are stable. Housing is moving (only to QUALIFIED buyers now, just like pre 9-11) and people will still need our services.

This country has seen 22 (+/-) recessions since its inception. we will prevail. Take comfort in that.

Cheer up Nick, you know it will be soon that you can't keep up with the work load.

I called one of my builders today (to check in), and have 2 new jobs and a pretty good add on for an existing job we are already working. Small jobs.... but it looks like I have some of March and most of April all sewed up.

Well, we are couped up in the shop working on our tri-axle. We are gonna be stuck there for at least a few more weeks. We really aren't worried about work, we always manage to find something to do.

I hate that kind of talk, it really can have a negative effect on work.
We have been lucky this winter with work and have been able to keep one crew going all the time.

Tell me about it. We were awarded a large contract a few months ago but just before we began, the news scarred the owner into holding off on the project until the market improves.

Re: Winter???

Well guys I was in the same boat as you, but today I am done bidding. We have a little over a million in actual contracts for spring which means despite all the doom and gloom, we will be balls to the wall busy. I just got two more contracts that puts me done bidding until JUNE. So tonight I am gonna wash off the coveralls and boots from last year do an inventory of my truck office supplies and call it good. I was pretty worried until today. It's not all bad yet.

Re: Winter???

This has been the first winter in a long time where we have not been able to squeeze in at least a little production. This winter has been absolutely zero. Temps have been just cold enough to keep things from thawing out and when it does warm up it rains and rains and rains..... Looks like about three more weeks to wait out.

Glad to hear that you guys have work. The way it is looking for us, all of our equipment will have some brand new shiny paint.

Re: Winter???

We have more jobs ready to start this spring then last. The weather is what it is. But with record rainfalls in CT it can be depressing right now. And just when you think startup is aroung the corner...here comes another 8 inches of snow tomorrow. I'm with ya, Nick.

Re: Winter???

I guess I cant complain about winter. We have kept a loader, skid steer and both dump trucks busy.We also dug 1 basement 2 weeks ago. We have 4-8" of snow coming monday. I guess i'm undecided on this one nice to busy with all the snow work but hate seeing a 120k excavator sit. Plus I need a little more time to heal from my knee surgery last friday.
