Wine And Dine

customers and service people....all kind of expect it, how do you handle it?

what i've found, is the owners of the companies i work for, know that if i have to wine/dine them, i'll just have to build it into the cost of the work i perform for them..i take them to lunch occasionally, etc....end of a project, my wife and i may take owner, his wife out for nice dinner...BUT

i've had some supers from large construction co.'s come right out and tell me what liquor store, resturaunt, bar they patronize, and would be nice to have prepaid tabs at them, and that would make things go lots smoother on jobsites...i've declined all of those, and have never seen any problems arise.

our city crews here are wonderful. they go out of their way to be helpful on our projects. we typically clean our shop out well one friday afternoon in a years time, rent tables, chairs....invite em all, roast a pig, couple of kegs of beer, set up a bar, rides home. they really seem to appreciate that.

any of you do anything like this?

We don't do anything like that. Do it once and then it will be expected. I don't need to kiss anybody's rear for work. You want me to do the work because we do a good job, not because we bought you a case of beer. Unfortunately, it goes on more than it should.

The company has a big Christmas Party, inviting all subs, suppliers, inspectors and misc. crashers at the V.P.'s Barn, all kinds of food, drinks, and beer . Give out company sweat shirts. During the year we have an expense acct. to take people out to lunch, I'll buy once in a while for the guys who are on the job if I'm in a good mood ( thats not often )

Where I grew up in Stamford CT if you could imagine it, it would be expected by somebody.

Here in the Litchfield hills there's not much expected. We do some small things for customers and subs at different times of year.
