Whats Your Fancy?

How do you like the controls set up in your excavator? ISO or Standard?
I'm use to ISO, if I have to go in a machine that has Standard set up it could take me 2-3 hrs to get use to them and even then you feel kind of foolish trying to do anything. Like wise my skid steer is all hand control, if I get into a Bobcat that has foot pedals for the bucket operation, stand back! Yet I can go from excavator to rubber tire backhoe and not miss a beat. How do you fare?

Never used a cat with all hands. But I'll bet I could catch on pretty quick.

As far as a Hoe goes, they love it when I'm all hands.

Re: Whats Your Fancy?

Which is which? I so prefer swing/stick bucket/boom except I like the old CASE scratcher controls (swing foot pedals and four sticks) better than joysticks. Also, on loaders, I prefer seperate hoist and dump levers - can't stand a joystick on a loader.
I fooled with a DROTT excavator years ago that had the bucket and stick on the feet and the boom, swing and superstructure tilt on the hands. I always thought the tilt feature was cool. You didn't have to level up the ground beneath the machine quite as good as you otherwise would have to and, by tilting, you could clean out underneath of an object by digging alongside it.

ISO = Swing/Stick left side Bucket/Boom right side
Standard = Swing/Boom left side Bucket/Stick right side Which I believe is what Rino uses

Yeah Pipeguy, sounds like that Drott would blow my mind. although the tilting feature which I have seen would be a plus installing septics on a slope.

Re: Whats Your Fancy?

Our 200sr doesn't have a change over valve, but you're right Chris most of the newer machines do have the change over valves coming from the factories. Otherwise it's no big deal to switch the hoses around on the valve.

Yeah, our 580D is like that. We don't use it too much anymore except we have a plate compactor on for when we do pipe work.

Re: Whats Your Fancy?

I learned using John Deere controls, and thats about all I can handle. My machine has the valve, but I suck really bad at the CAT controls...

Re: Whats Your Fancy?

I only found this site three days ago and I am starting to feel old.

I learned on a Minneapolis Moline backhoe that had six levers then a Dyna-hoe that had four levers then a Case that had 3 Levers and foot swing most other brands with 4 levers or 2 sticks. Now a Cat with 2 sticks. I would pick the 3 lever Case if I could. There is a big difference in levers and sticks.

Excavators started with cable Lorain and Bucyrus Eries with 4 levers and 4 pedals and a side lever swing and no swing brake. Then Bucyrus Erie hydraulic excavator with electric over hydraulic controls and a Koehring with air over hydraulic. An early Poclain with 8 levers and a P&H fully hydraulic excavator with a crane type swing that has no swing brake. We now use Akermans and Bobcat with standard controls

One of the funniest things I ever saw happened between an air/hydraulic Erie and a sh*thouse. Suffice it to say the Erie won.
The last guy I worked for still had (2) Northwest cable hoes in perfect paint and working order. In fact he sold one not long ago that went immediately into service.
It was something to see a guy run one of those old rigs. The seats were small and hard and the cabs close-quarters. Moving parts were within inches of the operator and often an oiler hung on lubricating the machine as it worked. I think it's fair to say, given the user friendly, creatue comfort, high tech, low maintenace machines we have now-days, that the days of operating "engineers" are long gone. All my excators have a/c, heat and stereos. I think the newest wheel loader even has a CD player.

Re: Whats Your Fancy?

Pipe,
All the necessities in the new machines, gotta have them, what I really feel uncomfortable with is when it's 95 degrees out, you have the AC cranking and the guy in the trench is just sweating his jewels off, makes me feel guilty to the point where I have to open the windshield and pretend the heats getting to you also, but boy that fan just jacked blowing that cool air on your back is GREAT!
