What Hydraulic Fluid Do I Need?

Does anyone know what type of hydraulic fluid a case trencher uses? I dont have a manual for it because I cant find they model # on it anywhere. It looks like a 30+4 but a little bigger I think.

Common trans-hydraulic fluid is acceptable. No point in buying the expensive stuff. Last I bought was $30 for 5 gallons, and $16 for 2 gallons.

Save yourself some grief of repairs and call the local Case dealer, ask him then buy it were you want to. digger

Bit off topic...but here goes.

I worked for a guy whose dad owned all kinds of heavy equipment.

Well, one day he wanted to take his 1970 big block vette out for a spin. It was low on transmission fluid. He scrounged around and found a 5 gallon bucket of hydraulic fluid. He poured it into the transmission and we were off.

That 454 really puts you back into the seat.

I never did find out if that fluid wrecked his transmission or not.

A lot of hydraulic stuff uses atf, like snowplows. I would think the biggest problem with a transmission would be in the winter. I wonder what the difference is between atf and hydraulic fluid.

I own enough equipment that if there was a valid argument for proprietary fluids, i would know by now. I use the standard multi purpose fluid, including in my Case TF600 trencher.

Ill call the case dealer and see what they say. The trencher has been sitting for years so I have no idea whats wrong with it. I would rather find out it has a ton of leaks with $30 worth of fluid then $200 worth of case brand.

Harley Davidson, John Deere, Cat, etc. all recommend that you use their oils, lubes, etc. but I never paid attention to any of them. None of them are in the petroleum business.

I agree with that but I have to admit JD paint is really good stuff.

The reason I asked about the hydraulic fluid is I didnt want to dump something in a tear up some expensive parts.

Re: What Hydraulic Fluid Do I Need?

And I repeat, based on more years running this equipment then you have been alive, go to the parts store, but a few gallons of the cheapest hydraulic/transmission fluid they sell, and press on.

Manufacturers will spec a certain grade or weight of oil, or that is has specific properties they want....like low viscosity, or a high heat tolerance....and of course, they want you back for service and to buy only "their" brand of oil....to the absolutely uninformed, they would have you believe that the engine will lock up and the hydraulics freeze if you dare to use anything that didn't come from their store.....it is marketing.

Now, I own a Case backhoe and a CaseTF600 trencher....and if they need oil, they get the generic fluid. Same as I use in my forklift, scissor lift, Bobcat, utility tractors, etc.......

So where did you get this trencher?

"Their" paint is either PPG, SW, RM, DUPONT, BASF, etc.

Re: What Hydraulic Fluid Do I Need?

We use AW46 in almost everything.

Optimal operating range, from coldest start up to highest fluid temperature measured at tank.
AW32 - 17 to 147 degrees F
AW46 - 28 to 163 degrees F

AW32 would be equivalent to a SAE 10 weight oil
AW46 would be equivalent to a SAE 15 weight oil

And the nice thing is you can buy AW46 hydraulic oil at Costco. It was around $28 for a 5 gallon bucket, but is up to $42 for a bucket now.

I got the trencher at auction for $525, its a case 40+4, has a backhoe on one end and the trencher on the other. Its powered by a V4 wisconisin. A duetz diesel was a option, I wish it had that.

If it runs, and it is all there, you got a buy.

Re: What Hydraulic Fluid Do I Need?

Enter the model # 40+4 and you can get lots of info and maybe order parts from this link.

https://webparts.pvassociates.net/cnh/webparts/main.php

And I agree with Joasis on the hydro oil.

But I found that the original decals, (shown in searching the above referenced link), for that machine calls out type "F" trans fluid.

The machine was taken apart and in pieces in a farmers yard at the auction. It looked like everything was there which it was. After some magneto work I got the engine running and tomorrow the carb rebuild kit should be in. I need 2 hydraulic hoses, 2 new cables for the steering lever, and the auger on the trencher and it should be up and running.

My dad found out his friend knew the farmer and called him and asked what the deal was with it. He said he bought it with a bad engine and paid $4200 to have the engine rebuilt and never put it back together. The engine has a lot of carbon inside for being new, either he got burned or was thinking of his other trencher.

I could have got it for about $200 but some bozo wanted it and would stop bidding.
