Day,
Why not just follow this guy's
business plan?

I plan to register as a Veteran Owned Business to pursue government set aside contracts and fill SBA HUB requirements for prime government contractors.
Some background information on myself:
I am currently completing a Master's Degree in Construction Management.
I have LEED AP and PMP certifcations. I also worked as a Landscape Estimator for a year after getting out of the Army. In addition, I am single and have no family obligations.
My basic plan consists of partnering with a trade contractor to bid on government work to build a decent job portfolio. As time went on I would partner with additional subcontractors in order to take on a larger scope of work, with the goal of getting a General Contractor's license within a few years.
My father owned a site work company when I was growing up and I worked for him during the summers - so I think that I will start out bidding on site work.
Can anyone offer me advice?
Any one experienced with government contracts?
Is this feasible or would I just be wasting my time?
What pitfalls should I look at for?
Is there a better route to take than what I am thinking of?
Thanks.

I ran some rough finance numbers on how much it would cost me to pursue this for a year without working -in terms of office supplies, software, etc. Insurance requirements is the big unknown. As long as the sub is insured and bonded, would the government also require me to be bonded and insured?

Thanks.

You are going to have to grow a few more layers of skin if you wish to hang out here at CT!

Honestly, I thought it was kinder
not to respond to your post.
I thought that some of the guys who
eat dirt and sweat blood to buy the
equipment, repair and maintain it,
and make payroll might enjoy it.

Re: What To Charge!!!

1. How would you compete against people that are self performing their scope of work, when you have to mark up a subcontractor that has a markup included in his price already?

2. How are you going to compete against people that own their own equipment out right and only charge labor and fuel in this recession when you will be renting or whatever?

3. Do you know how much time, energy, experience etc.. it takes to put a bid out for commercial or government projects?

4. What are you going to do when the large contractors (that are just using you for participation points) require a performance surety and you have no equity in your business to get one because you don't physically own anything?

5. Working for your fathers sitework company when you where a kid and having a construction management degree does not, I repeat, does not qualify you to start a business in this specialty construction industry. You need to bid work for somebody for at least 5 years to learn the ins and outs of this cut throat ****. That would be a basic education because I know when received my degree it did not prepare me for jack squat.

Good luck to you, I hope you achieve your goals my friend.

I started my commerical contracting company before i completed by degree, maybe i was stupid but it turned out ok. I would suggest you build a up a truck load of cash first, i burnt through so much money in the first 18 months.

Re: What To Charge!!!

In most SBA HUB contracts you have to self preform at least a minimum percentage of the work. It is difficult, not imposible, to get certified without speciallized equipment of some sort. Just my two cents.
