Weather Days
As I wrote the "to cold" thread I thought to ask you who have employees when you make the decision to work or not work on a day where the weather won't allow you to be productive? If you are an employee how does the boss handle it??
I start watching 3 channels for their weather forecast and check the weather channel on the computer at 5:15 AM. Guys call in or I call them between 5:45 to 6:00 AM.
If guys come in after they are told to and the weather turns for the worse and you call it the quits before their on the job should they get paid ?? Travel time???
If the day goes bad after you start up. Do you pay a full day ? ?

Unless it's a Blizzard or Frigid weather and you know the day before, I always will give my guys min. 4 hrs. for showing up, always have. Lots of times I'd take them out for breakfast on top of it. Little things that some people appreciate.

If we know that it will rain the next day, then we say that we will see what the weather will be like in the morning. If it is a washout, then we stay home. If it light rain, then we will work, depending on what we are doing. If we show up and it starts raining, then we go home and my dad gives us 3-4 hrs. Most of the time if it rains, me and my dad go in the shop and do repairs.

we only do 2 hrs show-up pay for rain-outs. we'll call the foreman early and wave them off if it's a no brainer

We've always lived by a few rules when it comes to weather. Cold weather, if it is zero degrees, no work or if the wind chill is zero degrees. Rain, if your working in sand, keep going and get a good rain suit. Same with rock. Any clay or top soil that is soaked, shut er down for the day unless an extreme case. We never paid show up time because myself and other foreman usually had other things we could keep the guys busy with. Mainly the laborers, but occasionally I'd keep an operator or two around to help drain off any puddles or fix any bad wash outs if any. My uncles company there was always this thing that you had to show up to the job no matter what. But a lot of us tried calling the guys if we could if it was pouring. It's easier nowadays since there are cell phones.

Different venue, but I pay minimum wage to Captains that can't get off of the dock due to weather.

Some states have laws if the employee shows up and you send them home. I think MA is 3 or 4 hours of pay. We cancel outside work if they weather is in the teens or over 100 with the heat index.
