Watch Your Stuff!

I heard about some recent thefts of equipment today.

A guy pulled into my friends yard and was questioned as to what he was doing.
The guy ID-ed himself and he is an excavating contractor we all had heard of, (I knew his Dad), well this guy was looking for a grapple attachment someone stole from him.

Then he told about a few recent thefts.
A skid loader
2 hay balers
I am sure there are more that he did not know about.

Another friend had the hood stolen off of her car while she slept.

I know we all take some precautions to deter theft, but it seems with the slow down of work, the stinking, no good thieves are getting busy making it harder for the honest man to keep what he has worked for.

Just thought I would bring it up, maybe by being vigilant and somehow securing the machinery better, (master disconnects, lojack, lighting) maybe none of us gets hit.

3 of my machines have electronic theft protection, when activated you must enter a code into the machines control panel or the unit will not start.

What do you guys use to deter theft?

That is one deterrent that I also use, I do however prefer double aught buck.

The problem w/Remington is it can't be there 24 hours a day.

We had a local plumbing company loose a mini ex and trailer, stolen from their yard during work hours. Some guys backed up to the trailer hooked up and hauled ass. The police are no help.

Equipment and quite a few robberies at gun point In the City as well. I know 4 contractors that got held up over the last 3-4 weeks.

They are getting bolder and bolder about it too.

Re: Watch Your Stuff!

I heard from a framing contractor that there is a gang of thieves working the west side of LA recently. They target construction sites, and specifically the Mobil-Mini type steel storage containers.

They throw a tarp over the area where they want to torch to cut down on the light they produce, and cut the lock assemblies off. Goodbye tools.

I like the idea of the Remington 870 with the double-ought too, but that's just for daytime strong-arm robbers.

Naw, you'll be ok.

We are just in a fairly densely populated area and access to major interstate highways is good and there is so much equipment moving around on any given day, nothing "looks" suspicious.

Gun Point, Hold ups!!

Hey wait a minute your kidding right? People are not allowed to have working firearms in the city, so how could anyone be held up at gun point. That should be the safest city in the land.......right?

Oh that's right criminals don't obey the gun laws.

Re: Watch Your Stuff!

I was working and living back in the DC Metro area from 1999-2001. I lived in Germantown and worked in different areas. Theft has been a huge for you guys for years. You can't even go to lunch in some areas and leave stuff out. Guys would even take a cutting torch to trailers in some areas.

Anyhow, I had a job in Great Falls, VA and left a generator, ext. ladders, 12" sliding compound, and other tools chained up INSIDE a 2.5 million home 200 yards off the road in the framing stages (house was dried in). The next morning, all gone. Someone cut through the extra thick security cable. The police did nothing as expected.

Manhattan was far safer in my experience and every other place I've been (quite a few).

I would not go back to that area now for any amount (and I made some of the best money I have ever made there).

That's why I will not work in DC. That and all the BS you have to go through just to do a simple job. Need a permit to put a ladder on the sidewalk. Can't get a permit to put a roll off on some streets. Can't bribe the meter maids.

Give me Great Falls any day. Good ole standard American thefts. Torches are illegal; only crimianls have torches.
