Craig's List?

No.

If you want help, target where your workers will look ....computers are for games, ****, gambling, etc.

A newspaper is where they look for employment.

Re: Unemployment?

I drove around for 2 years with an "operators wanted" sign on the back of my pickup and dump truck. I received less than 10 calls the entire time. One guy I did hire and he is still with me but most...not worth the time to call back.

I would like to grow the business but can't find the right personnel. It is hard to find labor that speaks the lingo that I am accustomed to, I speak 2 languages....English and.....Redneck it's getting more and more difficult to find anyone that I can communicate with!

And she wonders why I am always talking to myself!!

I agree with ya Tom. Finding the right guys is the toughest part. That is why we run small, but hard.

Re: Unemployment?

Depends on where you run ads. I use to run them in small newspapers that served 1-3 towns and got about 1-3 calls per week. I tried a large "city" newspaper and got 20-30 calls a day!

1-3 a week, 20-30 per day, what's the difference if they are all a bunch of crack heads or unemployed that need to have a company contact to put on their sheet so they can say they "looked" for a job this week?

I mean seriously Doug, 20+ calls a day? How many of those turn out to be good prospects that you would want to represent you on a job?

My guess would be very few of those 20+ ever make it to an interview.

Here's the numbers from memory; the ad ran for 5-7 days, I received about 110-115 calls. I prescreened the calls for experience, clean criminal back ground, insurance and all of the normal stuff. I found out that people lie...........they lie more then they tell the truth! I set about 30-35 interviews which lasted about 30-45 minutes each.

If I liked someone I asked that they think about what I offer and call me back in a set amount of time for a second interview. Out of the 30+ I liked about 7-8 and offered them work.

#1 had all over his application that he was in AA and never touched a sip. He ended up drinking with his helper before showing up to a clients home and no longer works for me.

#2 ended up taking a job a the HD

#3 went to FL on vacation and never came back

#4 did great, really great work during the day but would drink at night and call me bitching about stuff--he ended up stealing a few locksets before we parted ways.

#5 still works with me as a sub and does great work.

#6 ended up getting me 3 more subs (we had to part ways)

#7 quit so he could go to college

Overall the number is about 1 in 20 that will make it over a year. I have since learned a little about mass hiring.

One more thought, if your ads have some of the following terms you will scare off some people;

drug testing
clean criminal background
insurance

I would love to add "lie detector test".

Dougchips, you must have WAAAY more patience than I have. I could not deal with that many interviews and still be able to produce any work at all.

Maybe I am just not a people person.

Re: Unemployment?

Another few words that seem to weed out most undesireables are; send resume, leaders wanted . I do not use my phone number either, just a p.o. box. In the last three weeks in the local paper and weekly shopper I have only recieved 3 "resumes". That led to 1 interview on the phone and a face to face, I have not hired him yet but he has potential. Resume seems to put the fear of god into most people, I figure if they can read the add and then take the time to send something that resembles a resume they have some potential. With this method at least I am not wasting my time taking a bunch of calls. Applications and resumes can be a good laugh also; had one guy write in reason for leaving that his ex-boss was a asswhole(his spelling) I still laugh about that one.
