Topless Cat?

Curiosity here.
I saw a big older tracked Cat excavator
today, with no cab or cage of any kind.
Curious whether anyone knows a reason
that a guy would want to remove the cab?

Most likely, the cab was not removed. That was they way they were made back in the day.

Thanks, never saw a big one like that.
Back when, Hop-Toe's were pretty much
standard here-about when I did site work.

i would disagree, if it were a "cat" brand excavator...to the best of my knowledge, the oldest model was the 225.....and they all came with cabs.

Re: Topless Cat?

Could be an overseas model. Almost any machine is available without ROPS. Brand new CAT D8Rs built in Brazil sold throughout Asia & Middle East without any ROPS, engine computers, A/C, radio, etc... $350k delivered.

Re: Topless Cat?

Yeah, didn't know about the overseas
deal, but the puzzle was that it says
"Cat", not "Caterpillar" like the old ones.
Anyhow, got another look tonite, and even
from 75 yards out I can see telltales of the
"customizing torch" all around the left side.
Musta been an accident best fixed by torch.

You know what. I read this and thought you said a cat loader. I didn't realize that you said excavator in which case, I have no idea.

Re: Topless Cat?

Lots of mining equipment makes its way to surface use when it's sold in my area. Much of this stuff was pretty weird, and much of it without cabs to get it more compact. Ever hear a pneumatic starter turn over a motor? Sounds like an impact gun from the tire shop.
