Today

Today I was stung for the fifth time this year by a yellow jacket. It's been a long time since I have been stung that many times in one year. I was sitting here looking at my swollen hand and remembering the times I ripped open a bees nest in the ground with a machine. It's a heck of a sight to swing an excavator left with a bucket of dirt and start to swing back and see this dark form coming at you in the air with a loud hum. Or digging a trench and wondering who is shooting at you and what's bouncing around ricocheting in the cab as a stream of white faced hornets is attacking you. I could run much faster in those days.

Re: Today

Bee stings are always a pain.

But I have never been stung while operating a piece of equipment.

I have turned up some bees, hornets and wasps, but never been hit. Now, I have gotten nailed pretty good while running chain saws and doing other things but never while in the seat. Just lucky I guess!

Re: Today

Just a reminder...bee stings can be deadly, so when possible always tell someone near you that you've been stung just in case you have a bad reaction.
Stay safe

Re: Today

Nick, I was driving a dump truck a couple of days ago, somthing I rarely do any more, and I ahd the window down with my hand in the breeze. It hit a yellow jacket, he landed on my inner thy and he proceded to hump it. It felt like a hot ash had landed on my leg. Could just pull over. People near me must have thought i was insane screaming the way I did.

Re: Today

The big ones are good luck - whether you get stung or not. They signal life changing events for me...

last year a couple weeks after I started out on my own, I was out on the beach with a couple friends of mine. We see this yellow jacket come flying out of nowhere and he hovers around right on my shoulder for a while, and then I get pissed and swat him into the water. He proceeds to fly out of the water and makes a B-line straight up (that's odd eh?). Out of nowhere comes this bird from probably 70 foot away in the trees. Done deal - bee gets eaten by the bird. Pretty cool stuff.

Hope my business doesn't end up that way....

I've seen about five of them since. Always when something is on the horizon. Good or bad - it all leads you in the right direction.

Re: Today

Don't you find it kind of odd that they know to go after you and not just the machine. I've disturbed them in scrapers and dozers before. Big machines, but somhow they know you are in control of it and they go for the cab.

Re: Today

Gee, I haven't been stung in years. I stirred up a yellow jacket nest in the ground a couple weeks ago when grading up a yard with the dozer. I tried burying them, but you know, that never works. I was able to work around them without getting stung.
