Tips For Paving A Small Area.
I need to pave a area alittle under 200 sq ft on a jobsite. My blacktop sub was suppose to pave it tommorrow. He left town for some reason. I need this done asap. Is it fesible for me to do it and compact it with my reversible plate compacto with 6700lbs of force?
I am not worried about raking it smooth. We do that all the time. I am just worried about the finsh the compactor will leave. Will I be okay? |

Your plate tamper will do fine as long as you don't try and lay it down too thick.
I would think 4" max and you will be OK! |

Re: Tips For Paving A Small Area.
Matt,
I just had to do something very similar in size and I used a plate compactor and it worked great. No need to call in paving contractor with something that small.

Re: Tips For Paving A Small Area.
The reason I asked was because the guy I go to for sitework/excavating advice told me it never comes out the same with a plate compactor vs a roller.
There will be a 9" paver boarder between the section I will install and the 6 week old section. |

Re: Tips For Paving A Small Area.
you should have no problems and if you are paving only 2" a tamper is perfect. when you put it down don't over rake/lute it, it will loss heat and over working it will cause poor bonding between asphalt and agg. don't forget to keep the plate compactor wet from water of spray will diesel to keep the asphalt of the plate

either or, if you have a tank of the tmper to hold water or can keep the pad wet with out cooling the asphalt too fast do that, or spray the pad with diesel periodically to prevent sticking

but don't over diesel, for the same reason it stops asphalt from sticking it will break down the asphalt bond in your mat, less is more
Any other question? |

Re: Tips For Paving A Small Area.
You will not end up with the same finished product using a plate compactor as you would have if you used a roller. But maybe for what you're doing the finish with the plate compactor will be acceptable.

Re: Tips For Paving A Small Area.
I have to agree, if this is going to be something permanent that you are going to have to live with, get a roller. For my job it is only semi permanent. Using a plate compactor did a better job than I thought, but if it was going to be the finished product, a roller is what you need.
Tom, i got it, sorry about the confusion.

Re: Tips For Paving A Small Area.
The area is so small i doubt any contractor would bring a roller out. Half the time the roller would be on the lawn.
errr I will sleep on it. |

If you weren't doing it tomorrow, I could have got you some pictures. I am out of town and wouldn't be able to get pictures until this weekend.

Re: Tips For Paving A Small Area.
It comes down to not what size is the area (200 sq. ft.) but what are the dimensions.
Is this paved area 2' X 100' or 10' X 20' ? You can produce an acceptable finish with a plate tamper but it can be difficult. The larger the area the more difficult it can be to keep it flat with a plate. |
